+ Read moreLafite Rothschild 1986 in Double Magnum (3L) is a commanding expression of one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates in a legendary, long-lived vintage. Bottled in this rare large format, it offers both extraordinary aging potential and a truly ceremonial presence at the table. Combining classical Pauillac structure with a surprisingly sensual, hedonistic side, this is a top-class Lafite built to impress now and for decades to come.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1986 Lafite Rothschild shows a deep garnet core gently fading to a brick-tiled rim, a textbook sign of a mature, great Bordeaux. The nose opens slowly, at first slightly reticent, then unfurling layers of black cherry and kirsch, dried figs, cigar box and sweet caramel, with hints of cedar, graphite and warm earth adding complexity. There’s an exotic, almost seductive lift to the aromatics that marks this as a particularly expressive Lafite. On the palate, the wine is beautifully composed and still remarkably youthful in its structure. Silky, almost seamless tannins glide across the tongue, yet retain enough grip to remind you of the vintage’s firm backbone. Blackcurrant and black cherry fruit are wrapped in notes of dried fig, cocoa, roasted coffee bean and polished oak, all carried by a rich, glycerol texture that feels velvety and opulent. The finish is long, mouth-coating and persistent, with fine, lacquer-like tannins that linger. In Double Magnum, this 1986 is on a long plateau and can easily continue to evolve gracefully for another decade or more if stored correctly.
Production
Château Lafite Rothschild sits on some of Pauillac’s most hallowed gravel soils, a patchwork of deep, well-drained gravels mixed with sand and pockets of limestone that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1986 vintage was marked by a long, dry growing season, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, concentrating both flavor and tannin. Harvested by hand in small parcels to ensure optimal selection, the grapes were sorted rigorously before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The blend, anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, was then aged in a high proportion of new French oak barriques, where it slowly developed its trademark Lafite finesse, aromatic complexity and finely honed tannic structure before bottling in this rare Double Magnum format.
Food & Serving
This mature Pauillac calls for refined, flavor-rich dishes that can stand alongside its depth and structure: think roast lamb studded with garlic and rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, venison with a red wine reduction, or classic French dishes like duck breast or pigeon with truffle jus. Aged hard cheeses such as Comté, old Gouda or well-matured cheddar are also superb matches. Serve at 17–18°C (about 62–64°F) and, given both the age and large format, plan to double-decant or gently decant 1–2 hours before serving to allow any sediment to settle and the wine to fully open in the glass.
