Presented in an elegant gift box (en étui), this cuvée is blended from a remarkable range of reserve wines to offer depth, complexity and consistency in every bottle. It embodies Krug’s philosophy of creating the most generous expression of Champagne year after year, rather than celebrating a single harvest.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Krug Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition shows a luminous, deep golden color crowned with a fine, persistent mousse. The bubbles are delicate yet energetic, hinting at the wine’s tension and vitality. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of toasted brioche, roasted hazelnuts, marzipan and citrus zest, intertwined with notes of ripe stone fruit, apple tart, honey and a whisper of dried flowers. On the palate, it is both powerful and precise: rich and creamy in texture, yet carried by vibrant acidity and remarkable freshness. Flavors of nougat, baked apple, lemon curd and candied citrus peel mingle with hints of spice, almond and chalky minerality, unfolding in successive waves. The finish is long, harmonious and saline, inviting another sip. Built for longevity, this edition will continue to gain complexity and nuance over 10–20 years or more in a good cellar, while already offering immense pleasure today.
Production
Krug Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition is a multi-vintage blend sourced from carefully selected parcels across the Champagne region, reflecting a mosaic of terroirs including chalk-rich slopes, cool valleys and well-exposed hillsides. The cuvée brings together the three classic Champagne grapes—Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier—harvested by hand to ensure only the healthiest, perfectly ripe clusters make it to the press. Each plot is vinified separately in small oak barrels, a hallmark of Krug, preserving the individuality and character of each vineyard and year. Reserve wines from many different vintages are then meticulously assembled to create a Champagne of great depth, balance and complexity, followed by extended aging on the lees in Krug’s cellars before release, which contributes to the wine’s creamy texture, fine mousse and signature toastiness.
Food & Serving
This Champagne is extraordinarily versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as seared scallops, lobster, oysters, or caviar, but also shines alongside roast chicken, veal in cream sauce, truffle-based dishes, aged hard cheeses or even gourmet mushroom risottos. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F) in a quality white wine or Champagne glass to allow the aromas to fully develop. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or a gentle, short decant in a broad-based carafe can help the wine open up, revealing additional layers of complexity and nuance.
