Crafted from some of Napa’s most revered sites, this is a Chardonnay for serious enthusiasts who enjoy rich texture, layered complexity and a distinctly Californian sense of place. Think of it as a “mini‑Judge” in style: concentrated, structured and built to evolve.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Kongsgaard Chardonnay shows a vibrant, luminous golden hue with green reflections hinting at both ripeness and freshness. The nose is immediately captivating: dried lemon peel, mandarin oil and candied citrus are interwoven with toasted hazelnut, chamomile tea, subtle brioche and a delicate saline edge. As it opens, more floral notes and a gentle nuttiness emerge, adding depth and nuance. On the palate, this Chardonnay is densely packed and textural, with a viscous intensity that coats the mouth without ever feeling heavy. Citrus oil and preserved lemon lead, supported by ripe stone fruit, crushed hazelnuts, and a fine phenolic grip that gives the wine a tactile, almost savoury structure. The drought conditions of the vintage translate into impressive concentration and length, with a lingering finish of citrus zest, toasted nuts and chamomile. This has the structure and acidity to age gracefully; expect it to develop added complexity over 8–12 years, gaining more honeyed, nutty and truffled notes with time in bottle.
Production
Sourced from a selection of top Napa Valley vineyards—including Hyde, Arcadia and others—this Chardonnay reflects the cool, breezy sites and well‑drained, low‑yielding soils that Kongsgaard favours. In 2022, Hudson Vineyard was not part of the blend, shifting the emphasis slightly toward the tension and minerality of the remaining parcels. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters reach the cellar. Vinification at Kongsgaard is deliberately low‑intervention: whole‑cluster pressing, native yeast fermentations and extended aging in French oak barrels (with a judicious proportion of new oak) allow the wine to gain texture and complexity while retaining freshness. Minimal fining and filtration preserve the wine’s natural character and phenolic intensity.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Chardonnay that shines alongside rich, flavourful dishes. Pair it with butter‑poached lobster, seared scallops, roast chicken with morels, or veal in a creamy sauce; it also works beautifully with truffled pasta, mild washed‑rind cheeses, or aged Comté. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to balance richness and lift the aromatics. Decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine’s citrus, nutty and floral layers to fully unfold.
Producer
Kongsgaard is one of Napa Valley’s most revered small producers, founded by John Kongsgaard, a fifth‑generation Napa native known for his uncompromising approach and distinctive, Old World‑inspired style. From its inception, the estate has focused on low‑yield, meticulously farmed vineyards and minimal‑intervention winemaking to produce wines of great intensity, texture and longevity. Kongsgaard’s Chardonnays—especially the legendary ‘The Judge’—have helped define a benchmark for serious, cellar‑worthy Napa Chardonnay, earning cult status among collectors and sommeliers alike. The winery’s commitment to purity, terroir expression and artisanal production has made it a reference point both in California and on the global fine‑wine stage.
