From the iconic Côte du Py slope in Morgon, this is a red wine of depth and tension, combining vibrant fruit with a striking mineral backbone. Hailed as an outstanding vintage for this terroir, the 2022 delivers a wine that is both immediately captivating and built to evolve beautifully in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Morgon Côte du Py shows a deep, vibrant ruby to garnet hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose unfurls with layered aromas of tart blackberries, dark plums and blood orange, interwoven with notes of slate, oak leaf and a subtle, ferrous minerality. There’s a sense of energy and lift in the bouquet, with each swirl revealing more nuance. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied for a Beaujolais, with a precise, well-defined structure. Juicy, tangy black fruits take the lead, supported by bright, mouthwatering acidity and fine, velvety tannins that gain firmness from the wine’s natural concentration. As it opens, layers of umami-rich savouriness and an iron-tinged, saline edge emerge, adding depth and complexity to the persistent, fruit-driven finish. While already impressive in its youth, this 2022 Côte du Py has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years, and likely longer in excellent cellaring conditions.
Production
Sourced from the famed Côte du Py hill in Morgon, this wine comes from stony, decomposed granite and schist soils that are renowned for producing some of the deepest, most structured expressions of Beaujolais. The old vines of Gamay are typically tended by hand, with careful work in the vineyard to keep yields modest and ensure optimal ripeness while preserving acidity. Harvest is done manually to allow strict selection of healthy, perfectly ripe clusters. In the cellar, Jean-Marc Burgaud is known for a traditional, minimalist approach: whole or largely whole clusters, classic Beaujolais semi-carbonic or traditional fermentation in concrete or neutral vessels, and élevage that emphasizes purity and terroir rather than overt oak. The result is a wine that captures the raw mineral intensity of Côte du Py while remaining finely etched and remarkably precise.
Food & Serving
This Morgon Côte du Py 2022 is a versatile food wine that shines alongside dishes with depth and savoury nuance. It pairs wonderfully with roast chicken, duck breast, charcuterie, pork terrines, grilled lamb chops, and earthy dishes featuring mushrooms or lentils. It also complements semi-hard cheeses such as Comté, Tomme or aged Gouda. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Young bottles benefit from a brief decant of 30–60 minutes to soften the tannins and allow the mineral and umami layers to emerge; as it ages, decant gently to separate any sediment and let the wine fully express its Côte du Py character.

Jean-Marc Burgaud is widely recognized as one of the leading producers in Beaujolais and a standard-bearer for the Morgon appellation.
