Crafted without dosage, it captures Champagne in its most transparent, honest form, highlighting both the power of Pinot Noir and the finesse of Chardonnay. As the flagship of Henri Giraud’s environmental commitment, Esprit Brut Nature showcases a philosophy where humanity, craftsmanship and sustainability are inseparable.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Esprit Brut Nature shows a luminous, pale gold colour with fine, persistent bubbles forming a delicate mousse. The nose is precise and vibrant, opening with ripe citrus, green apple and white peach, then unfolding into notes of toasted brioche, hazelnut, subtle vanilla and a touch of spice from its small oak barrel élevage. Hints of chalk, wet stone and fresh herbs underscore its Champagne origins. On the palate, the wine is dry, tense and beautifully structured, with a core of juicy orchard fruits and citrus zest wrapped in a refined, creamy texture. The oak is perfectly integrated, adding depth and complexity without heaviness, while the chalky minerality delivers a long, saline finish. The zero‑dosage style emphasizes purity and energy, making it both immediately engaging and serious. Enjoyable now for its vibrancy and precision, it also has the potential to develop added layers of toast, honey and brioche over the next 3–6 years when well cellared.
Production
Esprit Brut Nature is rooted in the historic terroirs of the Champagne region, with a strong focus on the Premier and Grand Cru slopes around Aÿ, where chalk, clay and limestone soils lend both tension and richness. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing careful selection in the vineyard to preserve quality and integrity. Since 2016, Henri Giraud has eliminated stainless steel from the process for this cuvée, vinifying and ageing the base wines exclusively in small French oak barrels sourced from the nearby Argonne forest. This approach, combined with long lees ageing and bottling without dosage (Brut Nature), gives the wine its striking purity, depth and precision while reflecting the house’s commitment to sustainable, low‑intervention practices.
Food & Serving
Esprit Brut Nature is an exceptionally versatile Champagne at the table, pairing beautifully with oysters, scallop crudo, sashimi, ceviche and other raw or lightly cured seafood where its saline edge shines. It also complements grilled prawns, lobster, sushi, tempura, poultry with light cream sauces, and refined vegetable dishes, as well as aged cheeses such as Comté or Parmesan. Serve well chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to showcase its finesse and minerality. A brief decant in a chilled carafe, or simply 10–15 minutes in the glass, can help the wine open up its more complex, toasty and spicy nuances.
