As one of Guigal’s famed “La La” wines, La Mouline is renowned for its silky texture, layered complexity and impressive longevity. The 2013 vintage stands out for its purity of black fruit and elegant structure, offering a classic yet accessible expression of this legendary single vineyard.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Mouline 2013 shows a deep, shimmering ruby-purple core with a slight garnet hue at the rim, hinting at its early evolution. The nose is intensely perfumed yet refined, opening with ripe black plums and blackberries, complemented by notes of violets, graphite/pencil shavings, espresso, smoked meats and a touch of black pepper and spice. Subtle hints of grilled bacon, cocoa and a whisper of vanilla and sweet oak linger in the background. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably supple, with ultra-fine tannins that feel almost creamy rather than drying. The black fruit is vibrant and juicy—plums, blackberry compote and black cherry—layered with savory nuances of roasted coffee, grilled game, cured meats and a distinct mineral edge. The oak is beautifully integrated, framing the fruit without dominating it. The finish is long, polished and persistent, with fresh acidity carrying notes of dark fruit, spice and smoke. This is a wine with the concentration and balance to age gracefully for two decades or more from vintage, showing well now with decanting but still capable of evolving additional complexity.
Production
La Mouline comes from one of Côte-Rôtie’s most iconic single vineyards, situated on steep, terraced slopes of the Côte Blonde in the northern Rhône. The terroir is a mix of schist and granite with a high proportion of crumbly, mica-rich soils that promote excellent drainage and low yields, naturally concentrating the fruit. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Syrah with a notable percentage of Viognier co-planted in the same parcels, which is traditional for Côte-Rôtie and contributes to the wine’s aromatic lift and silkiness. Harvesting is done by hand due to the extreme slope of the terraces, with careful sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe bunches are used. The grapes—Syrah with a small portion of Viognier—are typically co-fermented, enhancing color stability and fragrance. Vinification involves a long, gentle maceration to extract fine tannins and deep color, followed by extended aging in new French oak barriques, where the wine gains additional complexity, texture and subtle notes of spice, coffee and toast.
Food & Serving
Guigal La Mouline 2013 is a superb partner for refined, flavor-packed dishes such as roasted lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast with black cherry or plum reduction, venison, or slow-braised beef cheeks. Its smoky, savory notes also work beautifully with game birds, charcuterie, grilled mushrooms and truffle-infused dishes. Hard, aged cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or mature Manchego make excellent accompaniments. For ideal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (61–64°F). Decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfurl; even at this stage of its life, a short decant will help the wine show its depth and elegance.
Producer
Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, Maison Guigal has become the reference point for the northern Rhône and one of France’s most revered producers. Based in Ampuis, at the heart of Côte-Rôtie, the estate played a central role in restoring the region’s reputation, raising quality standards and showcasing the true potential of its steep, historic vineyards. The trio of single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie wines—La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque—are among the most collectible and acclaimed Syrah-based wines in the world, frequently receiving top scores from international critics. Guigal’s meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and uncompromising approach in the cellar have made the domaine a benchmark for ageworthy, finely crafted Rhône wines that combine power, precision and elegance.
