Crafted from 100% Sangiovese in a remote, forest-framed corner of Montalcino, it captures the warmth of the 2018 vintage while remaining beautifully refined. This is a Brunello that balances generosity of fruit with precision, offering both immediate charm and serious aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Giodo Brunello di Montalcino shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet highlights, hinting at both youth and structure. The nose is inviting yet detailed, with ripe blackcurrant and dark cherry layered over floral notes of violet and lilac, and a mineral streak reminiscent of crushed limestone. On the palate, the wine is elegant and finely woven rather than massive, with ripe but well-measured fruit flowing over a framework of refined tannins. Dark berries, sour cherry and hints of plum are lifted by floral nuances and a subtle savory edge, leading to a long, precise finish marked by spice and mineral tension. The tannins are present, silky and well-managed, suggesting a wine that will evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more, depending on cellar conditions, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes over time.
Production
Giodo’s Brunello comes from carefully selected Sangiovese vines rooted in the rolling hills of Montalcino, where a mix of clay, limestone and well-draining soils, combined with surrounding forests, moderates the warm Tuscan climate. The secluded location enhances diurnal temperature shifts, helping preserve freshness and aromatic complexity in this warm vintage. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing strict selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Vinification follows a gentle, detail-driven approach: slow, temperature-controlled fermentations to extract fine tannins rather than brute power, followed by maturation in large oak (typically botti and/or larger barrels) to respect the purity of Sangiovese and the character of the terroir. The result is a Brunello that is polished yet authentic, emphasizing finesse over sheer weight.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for classic Tuscan cuisine and refined meat dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, roast game birds, rich mushroom risottos and dishes with black truffle or aged pecorino. It also works beautifully with hearty pasta ragù and roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C to showcase its aromatic complexity and balance; slightly cooler for a more linear, focused impression, or a touch warmer for fuller, richer expression. Decanting 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to help the aromas unfurl and soften the structure.
Producer
Giodo is the personal estate of Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy’s most acclaimed consulting oenologists, whose fingerprints are on some of the country’s most celebrated wines. Founded in Montalcino, Giodo is the realization of Ferrini’s long-held dream to craft Brunello from his own vineyards, in his own style, with an almost obsessive attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar. Despite its relatively young history compared to century-old neighbors, Giodo has quickly risen to prominence, earning critical acclaim for its purity of fruit, textural finesse and faithful expression of Sangiovese. Today, the estate is regarded as one of the most exciting modern references in Montalcino, consistently producing Brunelli that combine elegance, depth and age-worthiness.
