Sourced from the legendary Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this Barbera showcases remarkable intensity, purity, and drive. In 2021 the wine is especially explosive and energetic, capturing Barbera’s vibrant character with a seriousness and depth usually reserved for top Nebbiolo bottlings.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Francia Barbera d’Alba shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and vigor. The nose is immediately generous and complex: black cherry and ripe plum leap from the glass, wrapped in notes of incense, licorice, espresso, dark chocolate, and wild sage. Subtle undertones of violet, smoked earth, and graphite add further layers as the wine breathes. On the palate, this Barbera is rich and explosive yet superbly balanced. Juicy black and red fruits are framed by Barbera’s hallmark acidity, giving the wine lift and precision despite its density. Flavors of dark cherry, plum compote, mocha, black licorice, and savory herbs unfold in waves, supported by polished tannins and a long, mouthcoating finish. The 2021 is already impressive in its youth, but its structure and energy suggest excellent aging potential over the next 8–12 years, gaining even greater complexity and harmony with time in the cellar.
Production
The Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba is a steep, well-exposed site with clay-limestone soils that naturally yield low quantities of highly concentrated grapes—conditions that suit Barbera perfectly. Fruit for this wine is hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine clusters are used. Vinification follows the estate’s traditional philosophy: long, slow fermentations in large wooden vats, followed by aging in large neutral botti, allowing the wine to develop depth and refinement without overt oak influence. The result is a Barbera that reflects both its noble terroir and Conterno’s uncompromising, time-honored approach.
Food & Serving
This is a superb food wine, crafted for hearty, flavorful dishes. Pair it with rich pastas such as tagliatelle al ragù, braised meats, grilled lamb, roast pork, game birds, or aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Its vibrant acidity also makes it an excellent match for tomato-based dishes and earthy mushroom preparations. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the aromatics to fully open and the palate to knit together.
