Crafted from 100% Pinot Noir, it offers a beautifully pure, elegant expression of fruit and minerality, wrapped in fine, supple structure. This cuvée underlines Fiona Leroy’s philosophy of minimal intervention and careful stewardship of the vineyard, bringing new energy and precision to one of Burgundy’s most overlooked southern villages.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Maranges 2022 shows a bright, translucent ruby color with garnet highlights along the rim. The nose is expressive and lifted, revealing red cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry coulis layered with notes of rose petals, violets, and subtle woodland spice. Hints of crushed stone, forest floor, and a delicate touch of savory herbs add complexity as it opens. On the palate, the wine is agile and finely structured, with juicy red fruit at the core—think redcurrant and pomegranate—supported by taut acidity and silky, well-integrated tannins. There is a gentle saline edge and stony minerality that carry through the finish, giving the wine a sense of precision and length rather than weight. In its youth, it is already highly approachable and charming, but it should develop additional aromatic nuance—dried flowers, truffle and more earthy notes—over the next 5–7 years.
Production
The fruit for this Maranges comes from hillside vineyards in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune, where a mix of clay-limestone soils and cooler exposures help preserve freshness and finesse in Pinot Noir. Vines are farmed organically, often with biodynamic influences, emphasizing soil health, biodiversity, and low yields to maximize concentration and terroir expression. Harvesting is done by hand, with careful sorting of bunches to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it into the cellar. Vinification typically involves a gentle, low-intervention approach: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, a judicious proportion of whole clusters depending on vintage character, and delicate extraction through pump-overs or punch-downs. Aging takes place in Burgundy barrels, with a restrained use of new oak to frame the wine without masking its subtle aromatics, and minimal sulfur is used at bottling to preserve purity.
Food & Serving
This Maranges 2022 is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roast chicken, duck breast, pork tenderloin, and veal, as well as earthy dishes like mushroom risotto, lentil casseroles, and beetroot or root vegetable tarts. It also shines alongside semi-soft cheeses such as Comté, Tomme, and mild goat cheeses. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic delicacy and bright acidity. A short decant of 30 minutes can help the wine open up aromatically in its youth, though a gentle pour into large Burgundy stems is often all it needs.
