+ Read moreFerrero Barolo Gattera DOCG 2019 is a single-cru Barolo from the prized Gattera vineyard in La Morra, crafted entirely from Nebbiolo. This is a refined, terroir-driven wine that balances classic Barolo structure with the elegance and perfume that La Morra is known for. Produced in limited quantities, it offers an authentic taste of one of Piemonte’s most celebrated hillsides in an outstanding vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ferrero Barolo Gattera 2019 shows a luminous garnet core with brick-orange reflections forming at the rim, a hallmark of traditional Nebbiolo. The nose is intense and layered, opening with rose petals, violets and dried cherries, followed by notes of red currant, blood orange, sweet spices, licorice, cedar and a subtle hint of tar and underbrush. On the palate, the wine is both firm and graceful, with precise red-fruit character—think sour cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry—interwoven with tobacco leaf, fennel seed, cloves and a mineral, almost saline edge. The tannins are fine but assertive, providing the classic Barolo backbone, while fresh acidity keeps everything lifted and energetic. The 2019 vintage offers excellent aging potential: enjoyable now with proper aeration, but it will develop further complexity over the next 10–15 years, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, dried herbs and truffle.
Production
The Gattera cru sits on the slopes of La Morra in the heart of Barolo, with calcareous marl soils rich in clay and limestone that give Nebbiolo its aromatic lift and refined tannins. Ferrero carefully monitors the vineyard through the growing season, typically harvesting by hand in small crates to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the cellar. After a gentle crushing, fermentation takes place with temperature control to preserve aromatics, followed by an extended maceration on the skins to extract structure and depth. The wine is then matured in oak—traditionally large casks or a balanced mix of sizes—for an extended period, allowing the tannins to integrate and the wine to gain complexity before bottling and further bottle aging.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes from both traditional Piemontese and broader Italian cuisine. Think braised beef, ossobuco, lamb shanks, game birds, truffle risotto, tajarin with ragù, mushroom dishes or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C to fully express its bouquet and finesse. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics; older bottles can be decanted more gently, primarily to separate sediment.
Producer
Ferrero is a small, quality-focused estate in Piemonte, known for producing authentic, traditionally styled Barolo and other classic Langhe wines that reflect their specific vineyards. Working in one of Italy’s most prestigious regions, the family places strong emphasis on meticulous vineyard work and low-intervention winemaking to highlight terroir rather than winemaking fashion. Their parcels in renowned crus such as Gattera give them access to top-tier fruit, and over the years Ferrero has earned a quiet but solid reputation among Barolo enthusiasts for wines that are honest, ageworthy and consistently representative of La Morra’s more elegant, perfumed expression of Nebbiolo.
