Drawn largely from celebrated Saar vineyards such as Saarburger Rausch, Wiltinger Braunfels, and Oberemmeler Rosenberg, it offers an unusually refined expression at the estate’s entry-level tier. This cuvée continues a long tradition of delicately balanced, terroir-driven Rieslings from one of Germany’s most revered estates.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Scharzhof QbA shows a pale, luminous straw color with green highlights, signaling freshness and youth. The nose is vivid and pure, led by crisp green and yellow apple, fresh lemon, and tangy citrus zest, with delicate notes of apple blossom floating above and a subtle, stony undertone. On the palate, the wine is taut, finely etched, and refreshingly light on its feet. Accents of apple seed and apple wood provide a firm counterpoint to the bright, crunchy apple and juicy citrus core, adding a subtle bitterness that sharpens definition and length. The finish is long, clean, and mouthwatering, with a stimulating cut and a faint herbal-piquant note that invites another sip. Enjoyable in its youth for its energy and clarity, it also has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining additional complexity and textural nuance.
Production
Sourced predominantly from steep, slate-rich slopes in the Saar—most notably Saarburger Rausch, Wiltinger Braunfels, and Oberemmeler Rosenberg—this Riesling reflects the cool climate and mineral soils that define the region. The vineyards, many on vertiginous inclines, are largely worked by hand to ensure meticulous selection at harvest, with picking timed to capture both ripeness and bright, natural acidity. In the cellar, Scharzhof QbA is traditionally vinified in stainless steel and large, neutral oak casks, using gentle pressing and a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve aromatic purity and finesse. The result is a wine that is both transparent to terroir and classically Mosel in its elegance and balance.
Food & Serving
This 2020 Scharzhof QbA is exceptionally versatile at the table. Its freshness and subtle fruit make it a natural partner for delicately prepared seafood—think poached white fish, ceviche, sushi, and shellfish—as well as light poultry dishes, fresh salads with citrus dressings, and soft cheeses such as young goat cheese. It also pairs beautifully with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, particularly dishes featuring lime, ginger, or lemongrass. Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to emphasize its precision and vibrancy; decanting is not necessary, but a few minutes in the glass will allow the floral and mineral notes to unfold.
