Sourced from the famous Braune Kupp vineyard in Wiltingen, this Spätlese captures the delicately ripe character of the 2021 vintage with crystalline freshness and fine, natural sweetness. It is a wine that speaks clearly of its place: steep slate slopes, cool river breezes and a long tradition of meticulous craftsmanship.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale lemon hue with green reflections, hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is intensely expressive yet refined, offering layers of white peach, ripe pear, lime zest and fresh green apple, interwoven with delicate notes of white flowers, slate, crushed herbs and a faint touch of smoke and spice typical of top Mosel-Saar Riesling. On the palate, it is light-footed but concentrated, with juicy stone fruit, citrus and orchard fruit carried by a racy, mouthwatering acidity. The natural sweetness is beautifully integrated, never cloying, and perfectly counterbalanced by the minerality and saline edge from the steep slate soils. The finish is long, precise and filigreed, leaving impressions of lime, peach skin and wet stone. While already highly enjoyable in its youth, this 2021 Spätlese has excellent aging potential; over 10–25 years it will develop deeper honeyed, herbal and petrol nuances while retaining remarkable freshness.
Production
Wiltinger Braune Kupp is a steep, southwest-facing vineyard in the Saar, a cooler tributary valley of the Mosel known for producing some of Germany’s most finely etched Rieslings. The soils are dominated by weathered slate, which stores heat, drains well and lends the wine its distinctive mineral backbone. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in multiple passes (selective picking) to capture perfect Spätlese ripeness—where sugar concentration, acidity and flavor intensity are in ideal harmony. In the cellar, Egon Müller Le Gallais follows a traditional, low-intervention approach: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts—often in stainless steel and large old wooden casks—and extended time on fine lees. The resulting wine retains some natural residual sugar, giving the classic off-dry Spätlese style, with no need for heavy manipulation or oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Spätlese is exceptionally versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with spicy and aromatic cuisines—think Thai or Vietnamese dishes with chili, ginger and lemongrass—as well as refined Asian seafood, sushi and sashimi. It is superb with lightly spiced poultry, pork with apple or stone-fruit accents, and rich terrines or foie gras, where the acidity cuts through the richness. Classic German pairings include smoked trout, freshwater fish and mild to medium cheeses (especially soft goat’s cheese). Serve chilled at around 8–10 °C. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 30–45 minutes before serving, or allowing it to warm very slightly in the glass, will help the aromatics fully unfold.
Producer
Egon Müller Le Gallais is the Saar-based estate linked to the legendary Egon Müller domaine, a name synonymous with some of the finest Rieslings in the world. The Le Gallais wines come from the historic Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard, which has long been recognized as one of the great sites of the Saar, combining steep slopes, slate soils and a particularly expressive microclimate. Under the guidance of the Müller family, the estate focuses almost exclusively on Riesling and on producing Prädikat wines—Kabinett, Spätlese and beyond—that emphasize finesse, precision and longevity. The Egon Müller name is a benchmark for collectors and connoisseurs, and the Wiltinger Braune Kupp bottlings have earned a reputation for offering access to this world-class style with a distinct, vineyard-specific personality.
