Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Charlemagne Grand Cru shows a pale to medium straw color with subtle green reflections, hinting at both youth and tension. The nose opens gradually, first with cool crushed stone and chalky minerality, then layering in notes of dried honey, citrus zest, white flowers and a delicate touch of spice. On the palate, this is precise and finely etched rather than overtly opulent. A firm, racy acidity runs through the core, lending energy and lift to the natural depth of fruit and subtle creaminess. Flavors of lemon oil, green apple skin, almond, and light brioche are framed by a long, dancing mineral finish that lingers with saline and stony notes. While already compelling, this 2020 Charlemagne Grand Cru has clear aging potential: it should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years from vintage, gaining complexity in nutty, honeyed and truffled directions while retaining its backbone of freshness.

Production
The Charlemagne Grand Cru parcels for this cuvée lie on the historic Corton hill in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, where limestone-rich soils, marl, and a cool, breezy exposition combine to produce Chardonnay of great tension and mineral clarity. Domaine de la Vougeraie farms biodynamically, with meticulous work in the vineyard, low yields and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve both concentration and acidity. In the cellar, the grapes are pressed gently and fermented with great care, typically in French oak barrels (a modest proportion new) to enhance texture without overwhelming the terroir expression, followed by careful élevage on lees to build depth and complexity while maintaining a taut, mineral-driven profile.

Food & Serving
This Corton-Charlemagne is a superb match for refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, roasted poultry with morel cream sauce, or delicate veal in white wine and cream. It also pairs elegantly with aged Comté, Beaufort, or other fine alpine cheeses. Serve cool but not cold, ideally around 11–13°C (52–55°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth is recommended to help the wine open up and reveal its full mineral and honeyed complexity.
