Crafted from meticulously farmed vineyards in the famed Savennières appellation, it combines crystalline precision with real depth and texture. This cuvée showcases the unique character of the Gaudrets lieu-dit, where Chenin’s natural austerity is polished into an elegant, mineral-focused white of real finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Gaudrets Savennières presents a pale straw to light gold hue, with brilliant clarity and a subtle green shimmer at the rim. The nose is pure and focused, opening with notes of lemon zest, crisp pear and green apple, layered with white flowers, wet stone, chamomile and a delicate hint of beeswax and almond. With a bit of air, more complex nuances appear: quince, fresh herbs and a faint smoky, flinty edge typical of top Savennières. On the palate, this wine is dry, taut and finely etched, balancing vibrant acidity with a concentrated core of orchard fruits and citrus. Flavours of pear, yellow apple and Meyer lemon mingle with saline minerality, crushed stone and a light honeyed note that hints at Chenin’s natural richness without ever feeling sweet. The texture is both silky and structured, with a persistent, mouthwatering finish that leaves impressions of grapefruit pith, chalk and subtle spice. While already approachable in its youth, the 2022 has clear aging potential; over 5–10 years it should gain in complexity, bringing out more waxy, nutty and lanolin tones while preserving its mineral backbone.
Production
Gaudrets is sourced from a carefully delimited parcel in Savennières, where Chenin Blanc is rooted in schist-rich soils with layers of volcanic rock and sandstone. This rugged terroir, swept by Loire Valley breezes, naturally limits yields and concentrates flavour, giving wines of tension, salinity and depth. Domaine Belargus farms organically and biodynamically, favoring hand work in the vineyard and manual harvesting at optimal ripeness, often carried out in several passes to ensure only perfectly healthy, mature berries are selected. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented with minimal intervention, typically in a mix of stainless steel and large neutral vessels, allowing the native yeasts and the terroir to shape the wine’s character. Aging on fine lees adds texture and complexity without masking the precision and minerality that define this cuvée, and new oak, if used at all, is kept discreet so the purity of Chenin and the Gaudrets site can shine.
Food & Serving
Domaine Belargus Gaudrets Savennières 2022 is a versatile gastronomic white that shines with refined, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with shellfish (oysters, scallops, lobster), simply grilled white fish, roasted chicken, veal in light cream sauces, and vegetable-driven plates such as asparagus, fennel, artichokes or mushroom risotto. It also works well with semi-hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda, or Loire goat cheeses. Serve at 10–12 °C (50–54 °F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and mineral tension. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes or a generous pour into large white wine glasses helps the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more layers of fruit, florals and subtle smokiness.
Producer
Domaine Belargus is a relatively young but already highly acclaimed estate in the Loire Valley, created by entrepreneur and wine lover Ivan Massonnat with a clear vision: to elevate the great terroirs of Anjou and Savennières to their rightful place among the world’s finest white wines. Drawing on historic sites and old-vine Chenin Blanc, the domaine works parcel by parcel, much like a Burgundian domaine, to highlight the individuality of its crus, including Gaudrets. From the outset, Belargus has committed to organic and biodynamic farming and low-intervention winemaking, quickly earning a reputation as one of the region’s most dynamic addresses. In a short time, the estate’s wines have attracted critical acclaim and are now regarded as benchmarks for contemporary, terroir-expressive Chenin Blanc in the Loire.
