Crafted from old-vine Syrah with a touch of Viognier, it is both richly structured and seductively aromatic, built to impress now and evolve beautifully over time. This cuvée takes its name from the historic Château d’Ampuis, a Renaissance castle on the banks of the Rhône that has become synonymous with Guigal’s most emblematic Côte-Rôtie bottling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Château d’Ampuis shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, hinting at its intensity and youth. The nose is complex and expressive, with layers of blackberries, blackcurrants, and dark cherries wrapped in notes of violets, smoked meat, cracked pepper, vanilla, and sweet spice from extended oak aging, plus a subtle floral lift from the Viognier. On the palate, this is full-bodied, concentrated, and polished, with ripe black fruit framed by firm yet velvety tannins. Flavors of cassis, plum, and black cherry are joined by savory elements—olive tapenade, bacon fat, graphite, and a touch of cocoa—leading into a long, harmonious, and spicy finish. The oak is present but well-integrated, supporting the wine’s structure rather than dominating it. 2019 is a powerful, ripe vintage, and this wine has significant aging potential: it can be enjoyed now with a proper decant, but will reward cellaring over 10–20 years, gaining complexity, softness, and even more aromatic nuance.
Production
Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis is sourced from some of Guigal’s finest parcels on both the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde slopes, combining schist, mica-schist, and iron-rich soils that naturally limit yields and contribute to the wine’s depth and minerality. The vineyards are steeply terraced and largely worked by hand, with rigorous selection of bunches at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. The blend is predominantly Syrah with a small proportion of Viognier co-fermented in the traditional Côte-Rôtie style, enhancing color stability and aromatic lift. Vinification typically involves temperature-controlled fermentation with extended maceration to extract color, flavor, and tannin, followed by a long maturation—often around 36–38 months—in new French oak barrels, which imparts structure, spices, and a luxurious texture while preserving the character of the terroir.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis is an outstanding match for richly flavored dishes such as roasted lamb, dry-aged ribeye, venison, wild boar, duck breast with berry reduction, or braised beef cheeks. It also complements game birds, truffled dishes, and mature hard cheeses like aged Comté or Manchego. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux or Rhône-style glasses to allow the aromatics to unfold. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is highly recommended to soften the tannins and open up the nose; as the wine ages, a gentle 45–60 minute decant will generally be sufficient, mainly to separate it from any sediment.
Producer
E. Guigal, founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis, is one of the most influential and respected producers in the Rhône Valley and a key architect of Côte-Rôtie’s modern reputation. Today run by the second and third generations of the Guigal family, the estate is renowned for meticulous vineyard work, strict selection, and long élevage, resulting in wines of remarkable consistency and longevity. Château d’Ampuis, once an historic noble residence dating back to the 12th century and Renaissance era, was painstakingly restored by the Guigal family and now serves as both the spiritual home and namesake for this prestigious cuvée. Alongside their famed “La La” wines, Guigal’s Côte-Rôties have helped define the region’s style and are regularly cited among the top wines of the northern Rhône, with numerous high scores and international accolades year after year.
