Crafted from meticulously selected parcels in the heart of Condrieu, it showcases the grape at its most aromatic and luxurious. As a flagship white of the Northern Rhône, La Doriane has become a benchmark for what this tiny appellation can achieve, vintage after vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 La Doriane is radiant and deep golden with a youthful brightness that hints at its concentration. The nose is intensely expressive and layered: ripe apricot, white peach and nectarine are woven with notes of orange blossom, acacia, honeysuckle and exotic hints of mango and candied citrus peel. Subtle undertones of vanilla, toasted almond and warm spice from barrel aging add complexity without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, this Viognier is full-bodied, silky and enveloping, with a generous texture that retains energy and lift. Stone and tropical fruits flood the mid-palate, balanced by a fine vein of minerality from Condrieu’s steep granite slopes. The oak is polished and well-integrated, contributing gentle creaminess and spice to a very long, aromatic finish. While La Doriane offers immediate pleasure in its youth, the 2022 has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for 8–10 years, gradually revealing more honeyed, truffle and nutty nuances with time in bottle.
Production
La Doriane is sourced from some of Condrieu’s finest, steeply terraced vineyards, planted on poor, decomposed granite soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The vines, many of them older, are worked and harvested by hand due to the extreme slopes, ensuring only perfectly ripe Viognier grapes are selected. In the cellar, the wine is traditionally fermented in oak barrels, predominantly new, and then aged on its fine lees with regular bâtonnage to build texture and aromatic complexity. This meticulous approach to terroir and vinification is what gives La Doriane its signature combination of richness, purity and depth.
Food & Serving
La Doriane 2022 is a natural partner for luxurious seafood dishes such as seared scallops, lobster with butter or citrus, poached turbot and rich shellfish risottos. It also shines with roasted poultry in cream sauces, veal blanquette, foie gras and delicately spiced Asian cuisine where aromatic intensity is welcome. Soft and semi-soft cheeses—such as aged goat’s cheese or mild washed-rind varieties—also pair beautifully. Serve slightly chilled at around 10–12°C; a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes in its youth helps the wine open up and fully express its intricate bouquet.
Producer
Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, E. Guigal has grown from a small family domaine into one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential and respected producers. Still family-run, now by the second and third generations, the estate is renowned for its uncompromising standards in both vineyard and cellar. Guigal played a key role in elevating the reputation of the Northern Rhône, from Côte-Rôtie to Condrieu, turning once-overlooked hillsides into global reference points for fine wine. La Doriane, introduced as a prestige cuvée of Condrieu, has consistently garnered top scores from international critics and is widely regarded as one of the appellation’s defining wines.
