In this exceptionally early vintage, Jean‑Louis Chave delivers a white that is both opulent and tightly coiled, clearly built for long-term cellaring. It’s a rare chance to experience a grand, ageworthy white Hermitage from one of the appellation’s most historic producers, in a year that pushed ripeness and precision to their limits.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Hermitage Blanc is deep straw to pale gold, with a youthful brightness that hints at its concentration and future evolution. The nose is complex and layered: ripe orchard fruits and baked stone fruits mingle with notes of toasted almond, white blossom, acacia honey, and warm spice. There is a sense of both richness and restraint, with subtle hints of beeswax and a faint mineral chalkiness in the background. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied, broad and concentrated, with a dense core of fruit wrapped in a refined, almost velvety texture. Flavors of baked pear, yellow plum and quince are underpinned by honeyed nuances and delicate spice, while chalky, dry extract gives definition and structure. A fine, gastronomic phenolic bitterness at the finish adds complexity and keeps the richness in check. Still a touch strict and tightly wound in its youth, it is clearly shaped for the cellar and should evolve beautifully for 10–20 years or more, gaining further nuance, truffle, and nutty complexity over time.
Production
Sourced from some of the most prized parcels on the Hermitage hill—Roucoule, Péléat, Maison Blanche and Ermite—this wine reflects classic Hermitage terroir: steep granitic slopes, limestone influences, and varied exposures that bring both power and finesse. The 2022 vintage brought the earliest harvest in the estate’s history, with Roucoule and Péléat picked on 23–24 August and Maison Blanche and Ermite on 28 August, capturing ripe yet carefully balanced fruit. The blend is dominated by Marsanne, with a smaller proportion of Roussanne, harvested by hand at optimal maturity. Traditional, low‑intervention vinification in the cellar allows each parcel to be fermented and raised separately, often in a mix of neutral and carefully selected oak, before blending. The aim is not overt oakiness, but texture, depth and a faithful expression of the hill of Hermitage itself.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic white Hermitage that shines alongside richly flavored dishes: think roasted poultry with morels, veal in cream sauce, lobster, scallops, monkfish, or turbot with beurre blanc. It also pairs superbly with truffled dishes, earthy mushroom preparations and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Beaufort. Serve at 11–13°C to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfold; too cold and the wine’s complexity will be muted. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the structure and open up the bouquet, while mature bottles can be gently decanted primarily to separate from any sediment.
Producer
The Chave family has been synonymous with Hermitage for centuries, with an unbroken winemaking lineage on the hill dating back to the 15th century. Today, Jean‑Louis Chave is regarded as one of the great guardians of Hermitage tradition, meticulously farming a mosaic of parcels that span the appellation’s most historic climats. The domaine’s philosophy focuses on expressing the entirety of the hill through careful blending and respectful, artisanal viticulture rather than chasing fashion or single‑parcel exclusivity. Widely considered one of the reference points for both red and white Hermitage, Chave’s wines are fixtures in the cellars of serious collectors and have helped define the global reputation of Hermitage as one of France’s most noble and ageworthy wine regions.
