Crafted from a carefully balanced blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, it marries depth and structure with seductive freshness. This limited cuvée “Distique” line is produced in small quantities, showcasing individual expressions of the estate’s best parcels in standout vintages such as 2016.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Distique 9 displays a deep, vibrant ruby color with garnet reflections toward the rim, hinting at both concentration and emerging maturity. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe black cherries, plum, and blackcurrant are woven with notes of violets, graphite, cedar, and a touch of warm spice and cocoa. Subtle hints of tobacco leaf and crushed stone add complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, with a silky attack that quickly gives way to a firm yet polished tannic backbone. Dark berry fruit is framed by savory notes of pencil shavings, licorice, and baking spices, supported by fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively and focused. The finish is long, precise, and mouthcoating, with lingering notes of black fruit and mineral tension. Well-structured and harmonious, this 2016 still has excellent aging potential; it can be enjoyed now with a decant, but will continue to evolve gracefully for another 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and softness.
Production
The fruit for Château Mangot TODESCHINI Distique 9 2016 comes from carefully selected parcels on the limestone and clay-limestone slopes of Saint-Émilion, a terroir known for imparting both power and freshness. Vines are managed with a high degree of care to limit yields and enhance concentration, and harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel, typically by hand, to ensure only perfectly ripe grapes are brought to the cellar. After rigorous sorting, the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled vats, allowing each variety and parcel to express its character. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, for an extended period to refine tannins, add texture, and integrate subtle notes of toast and spice while preserving the purity of the fruit and the mineral backbone of the terroir.
Food & Serving
This cuvée pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte with shallot jus, duck breast, or slow-braised beef. It also shines alongside richer dishes like mushroom risotto, game birds, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to unfurl its aromatic complexity and soften the tannins.
