This is a richly structured, dark-fruited vintage with the balance and tannic backbone to evolve beautifully, yet already offering impressive generosity in its youth. A classic Beaucastel, it marries power, finesse and complexity in one of France’s most historic appellations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape shows a deep, vibrant ruby to garnet hue, hinting at its intensity and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered, with notes of ripe black plum, black cherry and dark berries intertwined with licorice, cola, garrigue herbs (thyme, rosemary, lavender), warm spice and a touch of smoked meat and leather. On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety yet firmly structured, with dense dark fruit framed by fresh acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Flavors of black plum, blackberry and spiced cherry are joined by hints of cocoa, licorice, pepper and dried herbs, leading into a long, slightly dusty finish that echoes with mineral notes and sweet spice. The 2019 has the stuffing and tannic grip for long-term aging, though in demi-bottle it will evolve more quickly than a full 75 cl. Enjoyable now with decanting, it should drink well over the next 10–15 years, gaining complexity as the fruit melds with its savory and earthy nuances.
Production
Beaucastel’s vineyards lie on the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape plateau, defined by its famous galets roulés (large, rounded river stones) over clay and sandy subsoils. These stones store heat during the day and release it at night, helping the grapes achieve optimal ripeness while the mistral wind keeps the vines healthy. The estate is certified organic and farmed according to biodynamic principles, with low yields and meticulous work in the vines. All thirteen permitted grape varieties of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are planted, with Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah and Counoise playing leading roles in the blend. Grapes are hand-harvested, carefully sorted, and vinified variety by variety—typically with traditional fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, partial whole-bunch use to enhance structure and aromatics, and aging in large old foudres and a mix of vessels to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. The result is a wine that is both robust and finely detailed, true to its historic terroir.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a superb partner for richly flavored dishes: roast lamb with herbs, braised beef, game birds, duck, slow-cooked stews (daube provençale), mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses all make excellent matches. Mediterranean cuisine featuring olives, tapenade, and roasted root vegetables also highlights its Southern Rhône character. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in this demi-bottle format, a decant of about 45–90 minutes helps the wine open and smooth out its youthful tannins. For maximum enjoyment, use generously sized red wine glasses to let the aromatics fully unfurl.
Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the most revered estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a benchmark for traditional Southern Rhône winemaking. Owned by the Perrin family, who have been at the helm for generations, Beaucastel was an early pioneer of organic (and later biodynamic) viticulture in the region, adopting chemical-free farming decades before it became widespread. The domaine is renowned for cultivating all thirteen permitted local grape varieties and for its unusually high proportion of Mourvèdre, which contributes to the wines’ structure, longevity and distinctive character. Consistently lauded by international critics and collectors, Beaucastel has helped shape the global reputation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape as a source of some of the world’s most complex and age-worthy Rhône blends.
