Champagne Gosset Extra Brut
GossetChampagne Gosset Extra Brut is a focused, vinous expression of one of Champagne’s most historic houses. Crafted with minimal dosage, it highlights purity, tension, and precision rather than sweetness, making it ideal for those who appreciate a drier, more gastronomic style of Champagne. This non-vintage cuvée brings together top sites from across Champagne to showcase Gosset’s signature intensity and elegance in every glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Gosset Extra Brut shows a luminous pale gold color with fine, persistent bubbles that form a delicate, energetic bead. The nose is refined and complex, offering notes of crisp green apple, ripe pear, lemon zest, and white flowers, layered with hints of brioche, chalk, and a subtle nuttiness from extended aging on the lees. On the palate, this Champagne is dry, taut, and beautifully balanced, with a vibrant acidity that frames flavors of citrus, orchard fruit, and stone fruit. Undertones of toasted almonds, fresh bread crust, and mineral salinity develop with air, giving the wine real depth and length. The finish is long, clean, and saline, with a mouthwatering, chalky grip that invites another sip. This Extra Brut is ready to drink now but has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 3–6 years, gaining additional complexity and creaminess.
Production
Gosset sources the grapes for its Extra Brut from some of Champagne’s finest terroirs, primarily premier and grand cru vineyards on the chalk-rich slopes of the Marne, including areas around Aÿ, the Montagne de Reims, and the Côte des Blancs. The blend typically includes Chardonnay for finesse and brightness, Pinot Noir for structure and depth, and Pinot Meunier for fruit and suppleness. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection in the vineyard, preserving only healthy, perfectly ripe bunches. In the cellar, Gosset is known for its refusal to use malolactic fermentation, which preserves natural acidity and freshness. The base wines are fermented in stainless steel to retain purity of fruit, then carefully blended with reserve wines for added complexity. After tirage, the wine is aged for an extended period on the lees in bottle before disgorgement, and finished with a very low dosage to create the Extra Brut style.
Food & Serving
Gosset Extra Brut is a superb food Champagne, pairing beautifully with oysters, caviar, and fresh shellfish, as well as sashimi, crudo, and simply prepared white fish. Its crisp structure also works well with goat cheese, soft-ripened cheeses, sushi, tempura, and delicately seasoned poultry or veal. Serve well-chilled at about 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its tension and aromatic complexity. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or in a decanter designed for sparkling wines can help it open up aromatically, but extended decanting is not necessary.
