Made from the island’s historic white grapes—Inzolia, Catarratto and Grillo—it offers a deep, golden-amber color, intense aromatics and a luscious sweetness that feels both indulgent and refined. As a Marsala Superiore, it represents one of Sicily’s most emblematic dessert wines, echoing a winemaking legacy that dates back centuries along the western coast of the island.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Marsala shows a dense, burnished amber hue with glowing golden highlights that immediately hint at its concentration and sweetness. The nose is intense and inviting, layered with notes of dried figs, raisins, candied orange peel and toasted nuts, wrapped in hints of caramel, vanilla and a touch of Mediterranean spice. On the palate, it is richly sweet yet balanced, with flavors of dried fruit, honey, roasted almonds and toffee unfolding slowly. The texture is velvety and mouth-coating, supported by a gentle, warming alcohol and a subtle saline note that recalls the maritime climate of western Sicily. The finish is long and persistent, leaving echoes of caramelized nuts and dried apricots. Properly stored, this Marsala Superiore has excellent aging potential and can gain further complexity over many years, developing deeper notes of nut brittle, spice and dried citrus.
Production
Cantine Mirabella Marsala Superiore G.D. is produced in Sicily from a blend of traditional Marsala varieties: Ansonica (Inzolia), Catarratto Bianco Comune and Grillo, grapes that thrive under the intense Sicilian sun and cooling sea breezes. The vineyards draw on poor, well-drained soils rich in limestone and clay, which help concentrate flavor while preserving acidity. Grapes are typically harvested at optimal ripeness to ensure both aromatic intensity and natural sugar richness, then softly pressed. The must is fermented and subsequently fortified with grape spirit to achieve the desired sweetness and alcohol level, following the classic Marsala method. The wine is then aged in oak casks, allowing slow oxidation and integration of flavors, which create the characteristic nutty, caramelized and dried-fruit notes that define Marsala Superiore.
Food & Serving
This Marsala is a natural partner for dessert and cheese courses. It pairs beautifully with dried fruits (figs, dates, apricots), nut-based pastries, tiramisù, dark chocolate, and flourless chocolate cakes, as well as aged hard cheeses and blue cheeses like Gorgonzola or Roquefort. Serve slightly chilled, around 12–14°C (54–57°F), to highlight its aromatics without muting the richness. Decanting is generally not necessary, but opening the bottle 10–15 minutes before serving allows the aromas to open up fully.
