This is a powerful, structured Champagne that marries Bollinger’s signature richness with the finesse and energy of the 2014 harvest. With its meticulous craftsmanship and long lees aging, it’s a serious, cellar-worthy rosé for true Champagne enthusiasts.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Grande Année Rosé 2014 shows a luminous salmon-pink hue with copper highlights and a very fine, persistent bead that speaks to its long maturation on lees. On the nose, it opens with complex, layered aromas of mandarin oil, wild red berries, blood orange and pomegranate, intertwined with notes of warm biscuit, toasted brioche, English walnuts and a gentle spice. The palate is full-bodied, vinous and enveloping, with a deep core of ripe red and citrus fruit supported by fresh, vibrant acidity. The dosage of around 8 g/L balances the structure without masking the wine’s tension, while the mousse is delicate and precise, carrying flavors of redcurrant, raspberry, orange zest, hazelnut and subtle chalky minerality. A fine phenolic grip on the finish adds definition and length, making this as much a fine wine as a Champagne. Already beautifully expressive, it has the concentration and backbone to evolve gracefully over the next 10–15 years, gaining further complexity in bottle.
Production
Bollinger sources La Grande Année Rosé predominantly from grands and premiers crus in the heart of Champagne, notably in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs, where chalky soils lend tension and minerality to the naturally powerful Bollinger style. The rosé character traditionally comes from an addition of still red Pinot Noir, often from the famed Côte aux Enfants vineyard in Aÿ, contributing color, structure and dark berry aromatics. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and rigorously sorted before being vinified mostly in small oak barrels, a hallmark of Bollinger that builds texture and complexity. After blending, the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle and is aged extensively on its lees for several years, developing richness and autolytic notes before disgorgement and a carefully judged Brut dosage of about 8 g/L.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic rosé Champagne that shines at the table. It pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as roasted guinea fowl, duck breast with cherries, veal sweetbreads, grilled lobster, seared tuna, or rich seafood dishes in beurre blanc. It also complements aged hard cheeses, charcuterie and earthy mushroom-based plates. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the full aromatic spectrum to emerge. Decanting is not essential, but gently pouring into a large-bowled white wine or Champagne glass and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help this vintage rosé open up and reveal its depth.
Producer
Founded in 1829 in Aÿ, Bollinger is one of Champagne’s most esteemed houses, famous for its Pinot Noir–driven style, barrel fermentation and commitment to traditional craftsmanship. Still family-influenced and fiercely independent in spirit, Bollinger owns a high proportion of its own vineyards, many in prestigious grands crus, giving it exceptional control over quality and style. Recognized worldwide—helped in part by its long association with James Bond—Bollinger has become a benchmark for rich, structured, age-worthy Champagnes. Its La Grande Année and La Grande Année Rosé cuvées sit at the pinnacle of the range, consistently lauded by critics and collectors as some of the most serious and food-friendly vintage Champagnes on the market.
