This is Bollinger at its most precise and expressive: rich, structured and deeply complex, yet defined by a remarkable freshness. Made predominantly from Pinot Noir with a supporting share of Chardonnay, it captures the distinct character of the 2015 harvest in Champagne with Bollinger’s signature depth and power.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Grande Année 2015 shows a luminous, intense gold hue with a fine, persistent bead that speaks to its long maturation on lees. The nose is layered and inviting, opening with notes of ripe stone fruits, baked apple and lemon zest, followed by toasted brioche, roasted hazelnuts, honeycomb, and hints of dried flowers and spice. On the palate, this Champagne is full-bodied, precise and deeply textured, with the structure of Pinot Noir at the core and the finesse of Chardonnay providing lift and elegance. Flavors of yellow plum, Mirabelle, citrus oil, and pear mingle with notes of almond, pastry cream, chalk, and a subtle saline edge. The mousse is creamy yet energetic, leading to a long, resonant finish. Already beautifully expressive, it has the concentration and backbone to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more in a good cellar, gaining further complexity and nuance over time.
Production
La Grande Année 2015 is sourced mainly from premier and grand cru vineyards in the heart of the Champagne region, with a strong emphasis on Pinot Noir from Bollinger’s historic strongholds in the Montagne de Reims and Aÿ, complemented by high-quality Chardonnay from revered Côte des Blancs sites. The chalk and limestone-rich soils lend a distinctive tension and mineral precision to the wine, balancing its natural generosity. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and sorted meticulously to ensure pristine fruit quality. True to Bollinger tradition, fermentation takes place in small, old oak barrels, adding texture and subtle complexity without overt wood influence. The wine then undergoes an extended lees aging in bottle, significantly longer than the legal minimum for vintage Champagne, before riddling and disgorgement, resulting in a wine of remarkable depth, refinement, and longevity.
Food & Serving
Bollinger La Grande Année 2015 is a gastronomic Champagne that shines at the table. It pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as lobster with butter or citrus beurre blanc, scallops, turbot, roasted poultry, veal, or truffle-infused dishes, and is exceptional with aged Comté or Parmesan. Serve well-chilled but not too cold, ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the full aromatic complexity to unfold. Decanting is not essential but can be beneficial for this powerful vintage Champagne; if serving with a serious meal, a gentle decant 15–20 minutes before pouring can help the wine open up and reveal its full spectrum of flavors.
Producer
Founded in 1829 in Aÿ, Bollinger is one of Champagne’s most prestigious and traditional houses, renowned for its Pinot Noir–driven style and steadfast commitment to craftsmanship. Still family-involved and fiercely independent in spirit, Bollinger owns an exceptional proportion of its own vineyards, including many grand cru and premier cru sites, giving it remarkable control over quality and style. The house is one of the few to maintain barrel fermentation and an impressive library of reserve wines, underlining its dedication to depth and consistency. Recognized worldwide and famously associated with the British Royal Household and cultural icons, Bollinger stands as a benchmark for rich, complex, ageworthy Champagnes, with La Grande Année as one of its flagship expressions in great vintages.
