Sourced from the steep slopes of Castelletto in Monforte d’Alba, this wine offers a classic expression of Piemonte: complex, layered and built to evolve. It’s a Barolo for those who appreciate precision and freshness alongside traditional power.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Fortemasso Barolo Castelletto shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, typical of well-made Nebbiolo. The nose is immediately expressive: rose petals, dried violets and red cherries unfold into notes of blood orange, licorice, tobacco leaf and a subtle hint of tar and sweet spices. On the palate, this Barolo is taut and refined, with a focused, vertical structure. Bright red cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate lead, followed by layers of dried herbs, anise, tea leaf and a mineral, almost ferrous undertone from the Castelletto soils. The tannins are firm yet finely grained, framing the fruit without overwhelming it, while fresh, lifted acidity gives the wine real drive and length. The 2019 vintage offers both purity and concentration, making this bottle enjoyable now with aeration, but it clearly has the backbone to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more, developing more leather, truffle and savory complexity over time.
Production
Fortemasso’s Barolo Castelletto comes from high-quality Nebbiolo vines rooted in the marl and limestone-rich slopes of Monforte d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most esteemed subzones. Castelletto is known for its altitude and cooler exposures, which help preserve aromatics and acidity, giving the wines a particularly refined, vertical profile. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, ensuring careful selection in the vineyard. After gentle crushing and a traditional, extended maceration to fully extract color, tannin and aroma, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels. The wine is then aged in oak, in line with Barolo DOCG guidelines, allowing the tannins to integrate and the bouquet to gain complexity while maintaining the purity of Nebbiolo fruit and the clear imprint of the Castelletto terroir.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes and classic northern Italian cuisine. Think braised beef or veal, osso buco, truffle risotto, tajarin with meat ragù, wild game, mushroom-based dishes and aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the aromatics to fully open and the tannins to relax, revealing the wine’s full complexity and finesse.
