Crafted from a native grape grown on Pico’s volcanic rock terraces, this non-vintage cuvée blends three harvests from a Solera system to balance electric freshness with layered complexity. Numbered bottles and microscopic yields make it a rare taste of one of Europe’s most dramatic wine regions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a luminous pale straw color with greenish reflections, hinting at its vibrant acidity and youthfulness despite the multi-vintage blend. The nose is intensely pure and saline, offering clean, mineral-driven aromas wrapped around notes of grapefruit zest, lemon peel and crushed seashells, with subtle hints of smoke and wet stone. On the palate, it is taut, racy and deeply mineral, with a spine of high Atlantic acidity that gives the wine remarkable energy and length. Bright citrus—grapefruit, Meyer lemon and a touch of lime—meets smoky, almost volcanic nuances and a distinct salt-tinged character that speaks clearly of its ocean-front vineyards. The texture from extended sur lie aging adds a gentle creaminess and roundness to the mid-palate without ever dulling the precision. The finish is long, saline and mouthwatering, making it as compelling as it is refreshing. Thanks to its high acidity, native grape variety and Solera-based structure, this wine has impressive aging potential; expect it to gain complexity over 5–10 years, developing more nutty, savory and smoky layers while retaining its mineral core.
Production
Grown on the island of Pico in the Azores, this 100% Arinto dos Açores comes from vines planted in fissures of black volcanic rock at the very edge of the Atlantic—so close to the ocean that locals say you can hear the crabs sing. The vines are protected from strong, salty winds by traditional stone walls known as “currais,” yet yields remain extremely low, especially in stormy years when sea spray inundates the vineyards near the high-tide line. Grapes are hand-harvested at full maturity and transported in small 20 kg baskets to preserve their integrity, then whole-cluster pressed to capture maximum purity and tension. The must ferments in stainless steel before the wine rests sur lie in small 600–1000 L stainless-steel tanks, with regular bâtonnage to enhance texture and complexity. From 2024 onward, Azores Wine Company has increasingly adopted a Solera system for select wines; this non-vintage cuvée draws from three harvests, allowing them to blend across years to balance the extremes of each vintage and to harness the grape’s naturally high acidity for extended maturation. Only 4,400 individually numbered bottles were produced.
Food & Serving
The intense salinity and brisk acidity of Arinto Dos Açores Sur Lies Colheitas 3 Harvests make it a natural partner for all things from the sea. It is superb with freshly shucked oysters, raw or simply dressed shellfish, grilled or baked white fish, ceviche, octopus salad, and delicate sushi or sashimi. It also pairs beautifully with simple green salads, citrus-dressed seafood dishes, and lightly smoked fish where its smoky, mineral notes can shine. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to emphasize its freshness and precision; as it warms slightly in the glass, more complexity will emerge. Decanting is not required, but pouring it into a good white wine glass and giving it a few minutes of air will help unfold its mineral and smoky layers.
Producer
Azores Wine Company was founded to revive and celebrate the unique viticultural heritage of the Azores, a remote Atlantic archipelago where wine has been made since the 16th century. Working primarily on Pico, a UNESCO World Heritage vineyard landscape, the estate has become one of Portugal’s most exciting and talked-about producers, showcasing indigenous grapes like Arinto dos Açores and Verdelho grown on stark, lava-stone terraces. Their vineyards, carved into volcanic rock and protected by dry-stone walls, are among the most extreme growing sites in Europe, yielding tiny quantities of intensely characterful wines. Azores Wine Company has played a key role in putting the Azores back on the world wine map, earning international acclaim for its precision, authenticity and willingness to embrace innovative methods—such as Solera aging for still wines—while staying rooted in the region’s singular terroir and history.
