This cuvée offers a more chiselled, lightly chalky expression of Chardonnay, contrasting subtly with the domaine’s richer Meursault bottlings. Born of an exchange of must, it showcases Alvina Pernot’s precise, modern touch within a deeply traditional landscape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale lemon color with green reflections, signaling its youthful energy and tension. The nose is delicately chalky and mineral-driven, with an understated, authentic character that gradually unfolds in the glass. Aromas of white flowers—especially chamomile—combine with hints of lemon zest, crunchy green apple, and a faint suggestion of almond and wet stone. On the palate, the 2023 Champ-Gain starts fresh and lively, led by bright acidity and a finely etched mineral line. Light chamomile notes echo from the nose, joined by citrus, subtle pear, and a faint saline edge that adds grip and length. Compared to some of Pernot’s other Puligny cuvées, the finish is a touch more restrained rather than showy, emphasizing finesse and linearity over opulence. Enjoyable now for its vibrancy, it should develop further complexity over the next 5–8 years, gaining texture and nuanced hazelnut and brioche notes with careful cellaring.
Production
Puligny-Montrachet Champ-Gain is a high-lying Premier Cru vineyard on the slopes above the village, where thinner soils over limestone and good drainage yield wines of tension, cut, and pronounced minerality. The fruit for this 2023 was sourced through a must exchange, allowing Alvina Pernot to apply her meticulous, terroir-focused approach from the very beginning of fermentation. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to preserve freshness, then gently pressed and allowed to ferment with careful temperature control in oak barrels, a portion of which are new. Aging on fine lees brings subtle texture and complexity while maintaining the sleek, linear profile that is characteristic of Puligny’s higher-altitude sites, with élevage designed to highlight the chalky, floral, and citrus-driven personality of Champ-Gain rather than oak weight.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet Champ-Gain 1er Cru 2023 is a natural partner for refined seafood and delicate white meats. Think poached turbot or sole with beurre blanc, scallops, oysters, or lobster, as well as roast chicken with herbs, veal in a light cream sauce, or simple dishes featuring morels and seasonal vegetables. It also works beautifully with goat cheese or mild, young cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C to allow the aromatics and minerality to fully express themselves. A short decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle ahead of serving, can help the initially discreet nose open up and reveal its floral and chalky nuances.
