Crafted from organically farmed vineyards in one of Ruppertsberg’s most prized sites, this is a wine that marries crystalline freshness with real depth and seriousness. Classified as an “Erstes Gewächs” (equivalent to Erste Lage), it offers near–grand cru quality at a still-approachable level.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling typically shines a bright, pale lemon to light straw hue with green reflections, signaling its youth and vibrancy. The nose is finely etched and elegant, offering aromas of white peach, ripe citrus, crisp pear, and green apple, layered with notes of crushed slate, wet stone, and delicate herbal hints—think lemon balm, chamomile, and a touch of fresh hay. Subtle floral tones and a whisper of smoky minerality linger in the background. On the palate, it is dry, precise and taut, with a racy yet perfectly integrated acidity that carries the fruit across the tongue. Juicy stone fruit and citrus are framed by a firm mineral backbone, giving the wine both tension and length. The texture is sleek but not lean, with a fine, almost salty finish that invites another sip. In a good vintage such as 2023, this wine will drink beautifully in its youth for its purity and brightness, but it also has the structure to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years, developing more honeyed, spicy and smoky nuances over time.
Production
The Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad vineyard is a classic Pfalz site, composed of weathered Buntsandstein (colored sandstone) on gently descending terraces that face east-southeast. Its slightly removed position from the forest and its exposed slope allow for long, even sun exposure from early morning into the late evening, promoting perfectly ripe, concentrated grapes while preserving freshness. Christmann farms these parcels organically (certified Bio), with low yields and meticulous canopy management to optimize ripeness and balance. Harvest is done selectively by hand into small crates, ensuring only healthy, optimally ripe Riesling berries make it to the cellar. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts, partly in stainless steel and partly in large traditional wooden casks, allowing the wine to capture both purity of fruit and subtle textural complexity. Extended lees contact adds finesse and depth while maintaining the linear, mineral-driven style that defines the estate.
Food & Serving
This dry, mineral Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, shining with dishes that echo its precision and energy. Think delicate seafood such as ceviche, scallops, steamed mussels or grilled prawns, as well as sushi and sashimi. It also complements lightly spiced Asian cuisine, spring vegetables, asparagus, white asparagus with hollandaise, and poultry dishes with citrus or herb accents. Creamy soft cheeses and fresh goat cheese are excellent matches for its acidity and salinity. Serve chilled at around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F) in a tulip-shaped white wine glass. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply giving it time to open in the glass, can help reveal additional layers of minerality and spice, especially in the first few years after release.
