Crafted in tiny quantities from organically farmed, old vines, it delivers remarkable finesse at a modest 12% alcohol. This vintage has already been hailed as one of the estate’s finest releases to date, combining understated power with a sense of quiet, island elegance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, 4Kilos 2020 is a vibrant ruby red with medium legs that hint at its graceful, mid-weight structure. The nose is delicate yet expressive, opening with fresh strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, and red cherry, layered with notes of dried rose petals, talc, and a gentle mineral, stony character. Subtle hints of orange zest, light toast, and spice add complexity without overwhelming the wine’s refined, floral core. On the palate, this is all about purity and precision. The wine is light to medium-bodied, with a cool, red-fruited profile and a beautiful line of acidity that keeps everything feeling lifted and fresh. Fine, powdery tannins give a chalky, almost calcareous texture, leading into a savoury, mineral-driven finish that lingers with rose, citrus peel, and a touch of aromatic spice. It’s not a showy or opulent wine; instead it’s discreet, nuanced, and deeply moreish, taking over your palate in a quiet, harmonious way. Enjoyable now for its brightness and perfume, it also has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over the next 6–8 years, gaining even more complexity and subtlety.
Production
The 2020 4Kilos is sourced from 20–50-year-old, organically grown Callet vines rooted in the distinctive "call vermell" red soils around the village of Felanitx in Mallorca’s Balearic Islands. This iron-rich, well-draining terroir helps produce wines of tension, finesse, and mineral clarity rather than sheer power. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted to preserve only the healthiest fruit. Fermentation takes place in equal parts stainless steel and wooden vats with indigenous yeasts, allowing the native character of Callet and its terroir to shine through. The wine is then matured for 12 months in 600-litre Allier oak barrels of third and fourth use, ensuring gentle micro-oxygenation and textural refinement without overt oak flavour. Bottling took place in February 2022, with only 16,000 bottles and 300 magnums produced.
Food & Serving
This elegant, finely textured red is a versatile partner at the table, particularly well-suited to refined, Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Think grilled or roasted poultry, rabbit, veal, or pork with herbs; tuna or swordfish off the grill; charcuterie; and lightly gamey dishes such as roast quail. Its bright acidity and red-fruit profile also make it a superb match for tomato-based plates, such as Mallorcan vegetable dishes, roasted peppers, and simple pastas with fresh tomato and herbs, as well as semi-hard cheeses. Serve at 14–16°C, slightly cooler than a typical full-bodied red, to emphasize its freshness and floral notes. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended to allow the wine’s subtle aromatics to unfurl, especially in its youth.
Producer
4Kilos is one of Mallorca’s most dynamic and influential boutique producers, founded in 2006 by winemaker Francesc Grimalt and businessman Sergio Caballero. The name "4Kilos" refers to their modest initial investment of four million pesetas, a statement of intent that great wine doesn’t require grand origins, only vision and dedication. From the beginning, the estate has focused on low-intervention, terroir-driven wines from indigenous Balearic varieties, especially Callet, working with old vines and organic farming to capture the island’s distinctive character. Their innovative, detail-oriented approach quickly earned them a cult following and critical acclaim, positioning 4Kilos as a standard-bearer for modern Mallorcan wine and a key voice in Spain’s new-wave, artisanal wine movement.
