It’s a wine that marries striking purity and finesse with real depth and complexity, showcasing just how elegant Cape Syrah can be. Named after its diminutive, unassuming vineyard tucked away near the sea, this cuvée has become a modern South African icon for lovers of finely tuned, terroir-driven reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 The Girl Next Door Syrah is a vibrant, translucent ruby with a slight violet rim, reflecting its cool-climate origin and precise winemaking. The nose is wonderfully aromatic and perfumed: expect layers of wild raspberry, sour cherry and ripe cranberry, lifted by notes of crushed violets, white pepper, dried herbs, and a subtle coastal salinity. Hints of graphite, olive tapenade and smoked charcuterie add complexity as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, this Syrah is all about tension and elegance rather than sheer weight. A bright, linear acidity runs through a core of red and black berries, with fine, powdery tannins lending grip without heaviness. Flavours of red plum, pomegranate, black pepper, thyme and a touch of cured meat unfold with air, underpinned by a cool, mineral spine and a long, savoury finish. While beautifully approachable in its youth after a short decant, the 2023 vintage has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining more earth, spice and umami complexity over time.
Production
The Girl Next Door comes from an exceptionally small, windswept coastal vineyard planted to Syrah in a cool maritime zone of South Africa’s Cape, just a stone’s throw from the ocean. Constant sea breezes, rocky soils and a long, slow ripening season give naturally low yields, small berries and intense flavour development at modest alcohol levels. Grapes are carefully handpicked at optimal ripeness, with meticulous sorting in the cellar to retain only pristine fruit. Fermentation typically includes a proportion of whole bunches to enhance aromatic lift, spice and fine-grained tannin, and is carried out with ambient yeasts to express the vineyard’s character as transparently as possible. Aging takes place in seasoned French oak barrels to add texture and polish without overt wood influence, resulting in a Syrah that is detailed, precise and distinctly coastal in personality.
Food & Serving
This refined Syrah is a superb match for dishes that echo its elegance and savoury complexity. Think herb-crusted lamb rack, grilled lamb chops, roast duck, venison, or chargrilled beef with rosemary and pepper. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom risotto, slow-braised short ribs, and charcuterie or aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its aromatic lift and freshness. For best expression, decant the wine for 45–60 minutes in its youth to allow the floral notes and spice to unfurl; as it gains a few years in bottle, a shorter 20–30 minute decant will generally be sufficient.
Producer
Savage Wines is the personal project of Duncan Savage, one of South Africa’s most respected and influential winemakers, known for his pioneering work with cool-climate, site-expressive wines. After building his reputation at Cape Point Vineyards, Duncan launched Savage Wines to focus on small, distinctive parcels across the Cape, working with low-yielding vineyards and minimal intervention in the cellar. Based in the Western Cape, Savage has become a benchmark name for refined, modern South African reds and whites, regularly earning top scores from international critics and a loyal following among sommeliers and collectors. The Girl Next Door Syrah, from a minuscule coastal site, stands as one of his most sought-after bottlings and a reference point for the potential of cool-climate Syrah in South Africa.
