Sourced exclusively from estate vineyards in Central Otago’s famed Bannockburn subregion, it balances precision and freshness with impressive depth and texture. Crafted from organically and biodynamically grown Chardonnay, this cuvée showcases Felton Road’s commitment to purity of fruit and transparent terroir. Since the 1990s, Felton Road has helped redefine what New Zealand Chardonnay can be—elegant, mineral-driven and built to age.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Bannockburn Chardonnay shows a pale straw color with green hues, hinting at its youthful energy and cool-climate origins. The nose is immediately lifted and detailed: white peach, nectarine and lemon zest layered with hints of green apple, acacia blossom and crushed stone. Subtle, well-judged oak brings nuances of toasted hazelnut, brioche and a light vanilla spice without ever dominating the fruit. On the palate, this Chardonnay is finely textured and beautifully poised, with a core of citrus and stone fruit framed by vibrant acidity. Flavors of Meyer lemon, grapefruit pith and juicy pear unfold into riper notes of peach and a gentle creaminess from lees contact. A saline, chalky minerality runs through the wine, giving it a precise, linear feel and a long, pure finish. Enjoyable now for its energy and aromatic clarity, it also has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining more complexity and savory depth with time in bottle.
Production
The 2023 Bannockburn Chardonnay is sourced from Felton Road’s meticulously farmed estate vineyards in the Bannockburn subregion of Central Otago, a high-altitude, semi-continental terroir known for its long, sunny days, cool nights and schist- and loess-based soils. These conditions produce low yields of intensely flavored fruit with naturally high acidity. The vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic, and all grapes are hand-picked at optimal ripeness to preserve purity and balance. In the cellar, the Chardonnay is gently pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts, primarily in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new to add subtle structure rather than overt oakiness. Partial malolactic fermentation and extended lees ageing contribute texture, complexity and a fine, creamy mid-palate, while the overall winemaking approach remains minimalist to allow the Bannockburn terroir to shine through.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is a versatile partner at the table, particularly with refined dishes that echo its freshness and texture. It pairs beautifully with pan-seared scallops, grilled prawns, roast chicken with lemon and herbs, or richer seafood preparations like poached salmon, lobster or monkfish with a light butter or beurre blanc sauce. It also complements creamy risottos, roasted root vegetables and soft-ripened cheeses such as Brie or Camembert. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and mineral drive. Decanting for 20–30 minutes, or simply giving it time to open in the glass, will help reveal additional layers of citrus, stone fruit and subtle oak complexity.
