Crafted in tiny quantities and sealed under wax, it marries Burgundian finesse with Tuscan soul, offering a white wine of remarkable depth, purity and precision. Drawing on historic Trebbiano plantings dating back to the 1970s – and even documented praise for Petrolo’s Trebbiano as far back as the year 300 AD – this cuvée stands as one of the most serious interpretations of the grape in Italy today.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Bòggina B Bianco shows a luminous golden straw color with subtle amber highlights, reflecting its extended aging on the lees and time in barrel. The nose is intensely focused yet refined, opening with layers of acacia blossom, honey and ripe white peach, followed by notes of almond, toasted hazelnut, saffron, and a delicate hint of bakery spice and flint. On the palate, this is a textural and structured white, with a creamy, almost waxy mid-palate from long sur-lie aging, balanced by vibrant, linear acidity. Flavors of stone fruit, citrus oil, chamomile and acacia honey are interwoven with salty, mineral tones and a fine, savory spice from French oak. The finish is long, dry and precise, with lingering notes of roasted almond and saffron. Thanks to its concentration, freshness and élevage of over two years on the lees, this 2020 has excellent aging potential, easily evolving over 8–12 years, gaining further complexity, truffle and tertiary nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Bòggina B comes from Petrolo’s historic Trebbiano vineyards in Valdarno, on the eastern side of Tuscany, planted in the 1970s at the Poggio vineyard and more recently replanted at the Bòggina vineyard using the same original clonal material. The terroir here combines well-drained soils and hillside exposures that deliver both ripeness and tension in the grapes. Trebbiano is harvested by hand in small selections to ensure perfect fruit, with only the best bunches making it into the final cuvée. Vinification is carried out entirely in French oak – bespoke barrels made specifically for Petrolo and carefully chosen tonneaux selected by Burgundy luminary Lucien Le Moine (Mounir Souma). The wine is fermented and then aged on its fine lees (“sur lies”) for more than two years, with attentive cellar work under the guidance of consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini and in-house winemaker Simone Cuccoli. Production is very limited at around 7,000 bottles.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic white that shines alongside richly flavored seafood and refined Mediterranean cuisine. It is superb with spaghetti alle vongole, grilled turbot, poached lobster, scallops with saffron sauce, as well as roasted poultry, veal in creamy sauces, and aged semi-hard cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and tension. A short decant of 30–45 minutes, or simply opening the bottle in advance, allows the wine to unfold its layered bouquet and texture, especially in its youth.
Producer
Petrolo is a highly regarded estate in Tuscany’s Valdarno area, best known for its characterful, terroir-driven wines and its flagship Bòggina and Galatrona bottlings. The property has deep historical roots, with written records attesting to the quality of Trebbiano from a Petrolo parcel called “Spedale” as early as 300 AD, when the land belonged to the Papal States and its wines were prized and shipped exclusively to Rome. In recent decades, Petrolo has become a benchmark producer for the region, combining meticulous vineyard work with cutting-edge yet sensitive winemaking. The collaboration with renowned Burgundy producer Lucien Le Moine for Bòggina B underscores Petrolo’s ambition to elevate Tuscan Trebbiano to world-class status. With glowing international reviews (including high scores from major critics such as Parker), Petrolo today stands as one of the most respected and innovative voices in eastern Tuscany.
