2020 Domane Serrig Vogelsang Grosse Lage
Domäne Serrig – Markus Molitor2020 Domäne Serrig Vogelsang Grosse Lage is a benchmark dry-style Saar Riesling from one of Germany’s most exciting estates. Sourced from the historic Vogelsang monopole and crafted by star winemaker Markus Molitor, this wine marries old-world heritage with meticulous, modern precision. Awarded a perfect 100 points by Wine Advocate, it stands as a reference point for what top-class Saar Riesling can be.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Vogelsang Grosse Lage is pale to medium lemon with a luminous, almost crystalline clarity that hints at its precision and minerality. The nose is strikingly pure and deep: lifted aromas of slate-driven minerality, crushed herbs, white peach, lime zest and cool citrus peel are wrapped in a fine, smoky nuance and delicate spice. There is a distinctive, cool, herbal-terroir character that clearly speaks of Saar’s steep, red-slate slopes. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied for a Saar Riesling, yet remarkably refined and tightly wound. The attack is intense and concentrated, with layers of citrus, stone fruit and subtle floral notes carried by a vivid, crystalline acidity. A fine, salty edge and a serious, almost tannin-like structure give the wine great grip and definition. The finish is extraordinarily long, saline and precise, with a laser-like line of minerality and a sense of tension that promises a very long life ahead. With around 12 g/L residual sugar perfectly balanced by racy acidity, the wine drinks dry in style and has enormous aging potential over decades.
Production
The Vogelsang vineyard is a 25-hectare monopole in the Saar valley, facing south to south-west and rising steeply from roughly 150 to 340 meters above sea level. The soils are predominantly reddish slate, imparting both a cool, herbal profile and a pronounced saline minerality to the Riesling. All fruit is hand-harvested from these vertiginous slopes, with careful selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are used. After harvesting, the grapes undergo skin maceration to tame the natural acidity, followed by gentle pressing in a traditional basket press. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, and the wine is then aged on its fine lees for 10 months in large 3,000-liter Stockinger oak casks, adding texture and depth without overt oak flavor. Finally, the wine rests an additional two years in bottle in the estate’s cellars before release, allowing the structure to harmonize and the terroir character to fully emerge.
Food & Serving
This is a powerful yet finely etched dry-style Riesling that shines alongside refined cuisine. Pair it with dishes such as turbot, sole or cod with beurre blanc, scallops, langoustines, sushi and sashimi, or delicately spiced Asian dishes where citrus, ginger or lemongrass feature. It also works beautifully with veal, roast chicken, fine charcuterie and semi-mature hard cheeses, especially alpine styles. Serve chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold. Decanting 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended in its youth to open up the nose and soften the tightly coiled structure.
Producer
Domäne Serrig was originally founded in 1904 as a royal Prussian state domaine in the Saar valley, envisioned as one of the most advanced wine estates of its time. After privatization in the late 1980s, the property entered a new golden era when Mosel icon Markus Molitor acquired it in 2016. Molitor—often dubbed the "Riesling superman" and holder of an extraordinary tally of 100- and 99-point scores from Wine Advocate and James Suckling—undertook extensive replanting and restructuring to restore Vogelsang’s full potential. Today, under the Domäne Serrig label, the estate has re-emerged as a flagship of the Saar, with Vogelsang recognized as a true grand cru site (Grosse Lage). The perfect 100-point rating for the 2020 Vogelsang Grosse Lage underlines its status as a new benchmark for dry-tasting Saar Riesling on the world stage.
