Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château d'Armailhac shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple colour with a youthful sheen at the rim. The nose is expressive and finely etched: blackcurrant and ripe blackberry are layered with notes of cassis liqueur, graphite, cedarwood, violet, tobacco leaf and a touch of dark chocolate and spice from well-judged oak. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a polished, velvety texture and a core of pure, dark fruit. Ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and plum are framed by fresh acidity and finely grained Pauillac tannins, giving both structure and poise. Subtle notes of pencil shavings, cigar box, espresso and crushed stone bring complexity on the long, savoury finish. This 2020 has the concentration and backbone to age gracefully for 15–20 years, evolving towards more tertiary notes of leather, cedar and truffle with time in bottle, while still being approachable in its youth with a short decant.

Production
Château d'Armailhac’s vineyards are planted on classic Pauillac terroir: deep gravelly soils with sand and limestone subsoils that offer excellent drainage and naturally low yields, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2020 blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot, all harvested by hand parcel by parcel to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection. After meticulous sorting, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing gentle extraction of colour and tannin. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, a proportion of which are new, for around a year before bottling, giving structure and subtle spice without overpowering the purity of the fruit.

This Pauillac is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast or grilled lamb, ribeye steak, beef Wellington, duck breast or venison, as well as richer mushroom dishes, truffle risotto and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight the wine’s freshness and complexity. For bottles enjoyed in the first 5–8 years, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the tannins soften and the bouquet to open; older bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant mainly to separate any sediment.
