Sourced from high‑altitude vineyards in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley and crafted using resolutely traditional methods, it offers an unforgettable mix of Mediterranean warmth and Old World finesse. This vintage showcases Musar’s signature blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, all handled gently and bottled without fining or filtration to preserve maximum authenticity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Musar Rouge shows a deep, vibrant ruby red with a subtle garnet edge hinting at its structure and aging potential. The nose is complex and inviting, opening with sweet red and black cherries, ripe plums and dried fruits, layered with warm spice, a touch of tobacco leaf and a hint of mocha and caramel. On the palate, the wine is supple and rounded, with a generous core of ripe red and dark fruits—think cherries, plum compote and macerated berries—supported by notes of mocha, caramel and delicate sweet spice. The texture is silky, with velvety, well‑integrated tannins giving both comfort and grip, while the finish is long, gently spicy and savoury, with echoes of dried fruit and subtle tobacco. Delicious and approachable now, this vintage has the structure and natural concentration to evolve beautifully in bottle for 10–20 years, developing more leathery, earthy and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
Chateau Musar’s red vineyards lie in the Bekaa Valley at around 1,000 metres above sea level, where hot, dry summers and cool nights help preserve freshness while ensuring full ripeness. The vines grow on gravelly, silica‑rich limestone soils that naturally limit yields and contribute to the wine’s depth and minerality. In 2018, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan were harvested and vinified separately, each fermented with indigenous yeasts in traditional concrete vats at temperatures around 27–29°C. After fermentation, the varieties were aged for about 12 months in French oak barrels, allowing each component to develop its own character before blending. The final blend was assembled and bottled in February 2019, without fining or filtration, as is customary at Musar, to retain texture, complexity and a true expression of the Bekaa terroir.
Food & Serving
This 2018 Musar Rouge is a highly versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with grilled or roast lamb, slow‑braised beef, game dishes, and richly spiced Middle Eastern cuisine such as lamb kofta, aubergine dishes, and tagines with dried fruits and warm spices. It also complements aged hard cheeses and savoury mushroom preparations. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, both to open up the aromatics and, in time, to allow for any natural sediment that may form in bottle as the wine ages.
Producer
Founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, Chateau Musar has become Lebanon’s most iconic winery and a cult name among wine lovers worldwide. Under the guidance of Gaston’s son, Serge Hochar—who studied winemaking in France and was named Decanter’s first ever ‘Man of the Year’—Musar gained international recognition for producing distinctive, long‑lived wines through periods of both peace and conflict, even continuing production during the Lebanese civil war. Located in the Bekaa Valley, Musar has championed low‑intervention, vineyard‑driven winemaking long before it became fashionable, relying on old vines, indigenous yeasts, and minimal handling in the cellar. Today, Chateau Musar stands as a benchmark for Eastern Mediterranean fine wine and a standard‑bearer for the unique character of Lebanese terroir.
