Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most celebrated wine estates in the world, rooted in the heart of Bordeaux’s Pauillac region. Since its elevation to First Growth status in 1973, Mouton Rothschild has been synonymous with excellence, innovation, and artistry. The winery traces its lineage back to 1853 when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild purchased the estate, with the Rothschild family overseeing a tradition of meticulous winemaking and pioneering spirit ever since.

Mouton Rothschild is renowned for its bold and complex red Bordeaux blends, primarily crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Each vintage expresses the unique character of the estate’s gravelly soils and the region’s temperate climate, resulting in wines celebrated for their structure, longevity, and remarkable nuance. While the château’s grand vin is the most famous expression, the estate also produces second and third wines—Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild and outre blends—which offer approachable glimpses into the Mouton Rothschild style.

One distinctive characteristic of Mouton Rothschild, setting it apart from other Bordeaux wines, is its fusion of winemaking with the world of art. Since 1945, each vintage of the grand vin has featured a unique label created by a prominent artist, including Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. This tradition reinforces the estate’s philosophy that great wine is a work of art in itself.

Beyond its artistic labels, Mouton Rothschild’s wines are revered for their depth, aromatic complexity, and refined tannins, often displaying notes of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, and exotic spices. These wines have remarkable aging potential, evolving gracefully in the cellar over decades. They are best enjoyed alongside classic French cuisine, such as roast lamb, game, or earthy vegetable dishes, which harmonize with the wine's layered flavors. Distinct from lighter or fruit-forward wines of other regions, Mouton Rothschild stands as a benchmark for Bordeaux—rich in history, innovation, and a unique sense of place.
