Description

Zaccagnini Passito Clematis 2016 is a luscious dessert wine from Abruzzo that showcases Montepulciano in a completely different light. Crafted in the traditional passito style from partially dried grapes, it offers layered sweetness, concentration and a deep sense of place in a compact 0.375L format. This is a bottle for those moments when you want an indulgent, meditative glass after dinner or alongside a special dessert.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Passito Clematis reveals a deep garnet hue with brick-red reflections, hinting at both its age and intensity. The nose is generous and inviting, with notes of dried cherries, figs and black plums, wrapped in aromas of cocoa, sweet spices, caramel, and a touch of tobacco and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is rich and velvety, offering a harmonious balance between sweetness, acidity and gentle tannins. Flavours of cherry compote, candied red berries, dates and prune unfold alongside hints of dark chocolate, roasted nuts and a subtle balsamic edge that keeps it from feeling cloying. The finish is long, warm and persistent, with lingering notes of dried fruit and spice. Properly stored, the 2016 vintage still has several years of enjoyable drinking ahead of it, with the potential to develop even more complexity in bottle.

Production
Passito Clematis is born in the hills of Abruzzo, where Montepulciano grapes benefit from a combination of coastal breezes from the Adriatic and the cooling influence of the Apennine mountains. The vines grow in predominantly clay-limestone soils that help produce structured, flavour-packed fruit. Grapes destined for this wine are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and then dried—traditionally in well-ventilated spaces—to concentrate sugars, aromas and texture. After the appassimento process, the raisins-like grapes are gently pressed and slowly fermented to retain aromatics and achieve a naturally sweet profile. The wine is then matured—often in a combination of stainless steel and wood—allowing flavours to integrate while preserving freshness and varietal character.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for rich desserts such as dark chocolate torte, flourless chocolate cake, tiramisù, or a classic almond biscotti selection. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino, especially when served with dried fruits and nuts. Serve slightly chilled, around 12–14°C, to emphasize freshness while keeping its opulent texture. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but pouring the wine 15–20 minutes before serving in a small dessert wine glass allows its aromatics to fully open.

Producer
Cantina Zaccagnini, often associated with the name of its founder, Ciccio Zaccagnini, has become one of Abruzzo’s most recognizable producers, known for its commitment to quality and its iconic twig-tied bottles. Established in the late 20th century in Bolognano, the estate helped elevate Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from an everyday table wine to a serious, characterful expression of the region. Over the years, Zaccagnini has earned international acclaim for combining traditional methods with a polished, approachable style, making Abruzzo’s wines accessible to a global audience. The Passito Clematis reflects the winery’s exploratory side, showing how the Montepulciano grape can produce not only structured reds, but also seductive, finely crafted dessert wines.
