Weingüter Wegeler’s Geheimrat J Riesling Spätlese Trocken is a benchmark dry Riesling from the Rheingau, showing impressive intensity, precision, and balance. Crafted from selected parcels across some of the region’s top vineyards, it reflects both the elegance of Riesling and the depth that only carefully chosen late-harvest fruit can deliver. First made in 1983, it has become one of the house’s proudest cuvées and a clear expression of Wegeler’s style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it is bright and polished, with a lively, pale straw colour that hints at freshness and concentration. The bouquet opens with peach, ripe stone fruit, subtle tropical notes, and white flowers, supported by a fine mineral edge that adds lift and complexity. On the palate, the wine is generous and mouth-filling, yet remains beautifully focused thanks to its vivid acidity. Layers of ripe tropical fruit, orchard fruit, and delicate floral nuances are woven together with a clear Rheingau minerality. It has excellent balance and enough structure to age gracefully for several years, developing even more depth and nuance over time.

Production
This wine is assembled from grapes sourced from up to 15 top vineyards around Oestrich in the Rheingau, giving it a broad and highly refined expression of the region. The fruit comes from late-harvested, very ripe Riesling grapes, selected for maximum flavour intensity and balance. Fermentation is carried out naturally and slowly, followed by extended maturation on the fine lees in old oak casks, which adds texture, complexity, and harmony without overpowering the wine’s purity.

Food & Serving
An excellent match for grilled fish, seafood dishes, or poultry with rich sauces, and it also pairs very well with mature, intense cheeses. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting is not usually necessary, though a brief airing can help if the wine is tasted young.
