In the glass, the 2020 Kirschgarten Riesling shows a pale lemon to light straw hue with a delicate green shimmer, promising freshness and tension. The nose opens initially a touch reserved, but with air it reveals its true character: wet stone, crushed chalk and herbal spice come first, followed by subtle yeasty notes and an almost smoky, flinty minerality. Only in the background do hints of ripe pear, white peach and a whisper of citrus peel quietly appear. On the palate, this is resolutely dry, taut and focused, with very little overt fruit and a strong emphasis on texture and minerality. A saline, almost slightly spicy edge runs across the mid-palate, giving the wine a nervy, mouthwatering energy. Production
The Kirschgarten vineyard lies in the Pfalz, where a mild, almost Mediterranean-leaning climate meets limestone-rich and stony soils that are ideal for mineral-driven Riesling. At Weingut Kurt Wolf, careful vineyard work and selective hand harvesting ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it into the cellar. The philosophy, especially since the 2017 vintage, has been to work as naturally and gently as possible: minimal intervention, spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts and extended time on the lees to build texture and complexity. The wine is vinified in stainless steel and/or neutral vessels to preserve the purity of the site, avoiding heavy oak influence and keeping the focus squarely on minerality, tension and an unadorned expression of Pfalz Riesling.
