Description

The Weingut Wolf Riesling Kirschgarten 2020 Magnum is a striking, terroir-driven white from the rising star of Pfalz, crafted in a distinctly purist style. Bottled in magnum, it’s built for slow evolution and generous sharing, capturing the edgy, mineral character that has made Wolf’s “natural-leaning” Rieslings cult favorites. This is not about flashy fruit, but about depth, texture and an honest expression of the Kirschgarten site.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Kirschgarten Riesling shows a pale lemon to light straw hue with a delicate green shimmer, promising freshness and tension. The nose opens initially a touch reserved, but with air it reveals its true character: wet stone, crushed chalk and herbal spice come first, followed by subtle yeasty notes and an almost smoky, flinty minerality. Only in the background do hints of ripe pear, white peach and a whisper of citrus peel quietly appear. On the palate, this is resolutely dry, taut and focused, with very little overt fruit and a strong emphasis on texture and minerality. A saline, almost slightly spicy edge runs across the mid-palate, giving the wine a nervy, mouthwatering energy. The acidity is present and vibrant yet well integrated, lending length and precision rather than harshness. In magnum format, the 2020 has excellent aging potential; expect it to unfold more layers of herbal complexity, subtle fruit and mellowed structure over 8–12 years in a good cellar, gaining harmony and depth with time.

Production
The Kirschgarten vineyard lies in the Pfalz, where a mild, almost Mediterranean-leaning climate meets limestone-rich and stony soils that are ideal for mineral-driven Riesling. At Weingut Kurt Wolf, careful vineyard work and selective hand harvesting ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it into the cellar. The philosophy, especially since the 2017 vintage, has been to work as naturally and gently as possible: minimal intervention, spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts and extended time on the lees to build texture and complexity. The wine is vinified in stainless steel and/or neutral vessels to preserve the purity of the site, avoiding heavy oak influence and keeping the focus squarely on minerality, tension and an unadorned expression of Pfalz Riesling.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Riesling Kirschgarten in magnum is an excellent partner for elegantly prepared dishes where freshness and umami are key. Think oysters, ceviche, marinated crudo, or simply grilled white fish with herbs; it also shines alongside sushi, sashimi, steamed shellfish, or lightly spiced Asian cuisine with ginger and lemongrass. On land, try it with goat’s cheese, fresh cheeses, asparagus, or vegetable-driven dishes featuring fennel, peas or herbs. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C, to allow the aromatics and texture to open. A brief decant of 30–60 minutes, especially in its youth, helps the restrained nose to blossom and brings the mineral and herbal components into sharper focus.

Producer
Weingut Kurt Wolf is a family estate in the Pfalz that has gained increasing attention for its characterful, site-expressive Rieslings, particularly since Dennis Wolf took a leading role in the cellar. With a clear shift towards more natural, minimalist winemaking from the 2017 vintage onward, the estate has positioned itself as a reference for purist, mineral styles in the region. Working closely with the nuances of Pfalz terroir and favoring spontaneous fermentations and careful, low-intervention cellar work, Weingut Wolf has earned a loyal following among enthusiasts of “natural Riesling” and modern, terroir-driven German wines. The Kirschgarten bottling, especially in magnum, is one of the key wines that showcases their philosophy and growing reputation.
