Description
Weingut Wittmann Weißer Burgunder Reserve Bio 2023 is a richly textured, Burgundian‑style Pinot Blanc from one of Rheinhessen’s benchmark estates. Crafted from organically grown grapes sourced from top Westhofen sites, this Reserve bottling combines depth, finesse and a striking mineral precision. Long lees aging and traditional oak maturation give it the gravitas and elegance wine lovers expect from a serious white Burgundy – interpreted through a distinctly German lens.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Weißer Burgunder Reserve shows a bright, pale straw to light gold hue, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, recalling the profile of earlier acclaimed vintages: ripe pear and crisp apple intertwine with notes of pink grapefruit and pomelo, complemented by roasted hazelnut, almond, and a touch of toasted brioche. Subtle vanilla tones from carefully used oak sit alongside herbal nuances of lemon balm and sage, with a delicate accent of white pepper and a faint smokiness.
On the palate, expect a creamy, almost weightless texture that carries intense flavor without heaviness. The wine is opulent yet finely structured, with a vibrant acid line that keeps the generous fruit in perfect balance. Chalky, smoky and slightly saline impressions linger on the long, persistent finish, giving the wine real tension and drive. Built on low yields and extended lees contact, this Reserve has excellent aging potential: it will drink beautifully in its youth for its purity and energy, but will gain further complexity and nutty, brioche‑like depth over 5–8 years in bottle, and potentially longer in optimal cellaring conditions.
Production
The Weißer Burgunder Reserve Bio 2023 is sourced from Wittmann’s best vineyard parcels around Westhofen, in the heart of southern Rheinhessen – an area renowned for limestone‑rich soils that naturally lend wines a distinctive, chalky minerality and finesse. The estate farms organically (and long since to biodynamic principles), maintaining low yields and meticulous canopy management to ensure optimal ripeness and concentration. Grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted to select only perfectly healthy, fully ripe Pinot Blanc berries. After gentle pressing, the must ferments and matures on the full lees for an extended period – historically at least 15 months – in traditional Halbstück casks (large 600 L oak) and small barriques. This combination of long lees aging and sensitive oak integration builds texture and complexity while preserving the clarity, precision and terroir expression that define Wittmann’s style.
Food & Serving
This Reserve Pinot Blanc is a versatile food wine that shines alongside refined, subtly rich cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled white meats (such as corn‑fed chicken, veal or pork tenderloin), buttery poached fish, seared scallops, or monkfish with a cream or beurre blanc sauce. It also complements mushroom dishes, truffle risotto, roasted root vegetables, and fine poultry terrines, as well as semi‑hard and soft cheeses like Comté, Gruyère or mild washed‑rind cheeses. Serve at 10–12 °C to showcase both its freshness and complexity. Young bottles can benefit from a short decant of 20–30 minutes in a medium‑sized white wine carafe to open up the aromatics; mature bottles should be handled gently and served without excessive aeration.
