Weingut Thörle’s Hölle Spätburgunder comes from a steep, limestone-rich vineyard in Saulheim, where old vines planted by the family’s grandfather give this Pinot Noir remarkable concentration and depth. It’s a terroir-driven wine with a serious, finely layered style that shows why Thörle is so highly regarded for Spätburgunder in Germany.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a vivid, polished red-fruit core with impressive depth and clarity. Aromas move from wild berries and dark cherries to fresh spices, subtle oak, and a gentle smoky note. The palate is focused yet generous, combining freshness with concentrated fruit and a finely structured feel. There’s plenty of energy here, along with a long, persistent finish that suggests excellent development over the next 10 years.

Production
Hölle is a steep vineyard site in Saulheim with one of the village’s highest concentrations of limestone and clay in the subsoil, giving the wine both minerality and structure. The vines are over 50 years old and were planted by Jakob Thörle with a German clone of Spätburgunder known for low yields and intense fruit. The wine was matured for 20 months in French barriques, 40% of them new and 60% used 3–4-year-old barrels.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast duck, pheasant, mushroom dishes, game birds, or rich pork preparations. Serve at around 14°C in large Burgundy glasses, and consider decanting briefly if you want to open up the wine’s aromas more quickly.
