Description

Chenin Blanc from Germany’s Hessische Bergstraße is still a rare sight, and that’s exactly what makes this 2023 Weingut Schloss Schönberg Chenin Blanc so compelling. Drawing on experience from South Africa and inspiration from the Loire, cellar master Julien Meissner crafts a wine that translates classic Chenin character into a distinctly cool-climate, German expression. It’s a precise, mineral-driven white that showcases how well this grape thrives on the region’s granitic and loess-based soils.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Chenin Blanc shines a pale lemon to light straw hue with silvery, greenish reflections, hinting at freshness and youthful energy. The nose is immediately expressive yet refined, offering notes of crisp green apple, quince and Williams pear, layered with lemon zest, white peach and a touch of ripe citrus. Underneath the fruit, you’ll find a distinct mineral thread—wet stone, a whisper of smoke and a gentle herbal lift reminiscent of chamomile and fresh hay, with subtle hints of almond and brioche from the extended lees contact. On the palate, the wine is dry, focused and beautifully balanced, with a lively, mouthwatering acidity that carries the flavours across the tongue. Orchard fruit and citrus are framed by a fine phenolic grip, giving the mid-palate both texture and tension. The granite and granodiorite imprint themselves as a saline, almost salty-mineral finish, alongside delicate notes of honeycomb and spice that promise further development in bottle. Enjoyable now for its precision and freshness, this Chenin Blanc has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity, a bit more creaminess and deeper honeyed and nutty nuances.

Production
The Chenin Blanc grapes for this wine grow in two key sites: Auerbacher Fürstenlager, rooted in weathered granite, and Bensheimer Paulus, planted on loess soils overlaying granodiorite. This combination of poor, stony subsoils and more fertile loess brings both tension and generosity to the fruit. The vines were harvested by hand at full physiological ripeness, ensuring optimal flavour development and careful selection of only healthy, concentrated grapes. After natural sedimentation, the must was allowed to ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in seasoned 500-litre barrels around five years old, allowing for gentle micro-oxygenation without overt oak imprint. The wine then matured on its full lees until January 2025, gaining texture, aromatic complexity and stability, before being bottled in March 2025 with minimal intervention to preserve its purity and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This Chenin Blanc is a versatile partner at the table and shines with refined yet flavourful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with freshwater fish (trout, pike-perch, char) whether simply grilled or served with beurre blanc, as well as shellfish, scallops and finely prepared seafood dishes. Its acidity and structure also make it a smart choice for poultry in light cream sauces, veal, roasted root vegetables, asparagus dishes and mild to medium-soft cheeses like young goat cheese, Comté or Tomme-style cheeses. Serve at 10–12 °C to highlight both its freshness and texture; a light decant of 20–30 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up aromatically, especially if served in a larger white wine glass.

Producer
Weingut Schloss Schönberg is an ambitious estate in the Hessische Bergstraße, a small but historic wine region tucked between the Rhine and the Odenwald hills. Working some of the area’s most promising sites, the estate has become known for its thoughtful, terroir-driven approach and its readiness to plant varieties such as Chenin Blanc that respond well to the changing climate. With a focus on sustainable vineyard work, careful hand harvesting and minimal-intervention cellar practices, Schloss Schönberg has helped raise the profile of this lesser-known region, drawing attention from sommeliers and wine lovers seeking characterful, mineral-driven wines. Their Chenin Blanc in particular underscores the estate’s innovative spirit and its role as a modern standard-bearer for the Hessische Bergstraße.
