Description

Weingut Rings Syrah 2020 brings a distinctly German expression to this classic Rhône variety, uniting cool-climate precision with generous, spicy fruit. Crafted in the Pfalz by one of Germany’s most exciting modern estates, it shows how Syrah can thrive far beyond its traditional homes. This bottling reflects Rings’ meticulous vineyard work and low-intervention philosophy, resulting in a wine that is both characterful and finely etched.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Weingut Rings Syrah 2020 shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with a subtle purple rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with dark berries—blackberry, blackcurrant and wild cherry—layered with cracked black pepper, smoked meat, violet, and a touch of graphite and subtle oak spice. There’s a cool, herbal edge reminiscent of fresh thyme and rosemary that signals its Pfalz origins. On the palate, this Syrah is medium to full-bodied yet beautifully poised, with juicy dark fruit framed by lively acidity and finely grained, chalk-dusted tannins. Flavors of black raspberry, plum and mulberry are interwoven with pepper, olive tapenade, smoked bacon and a gentle, toasty note from barrel aging. The finish is long, savory and precise, with a mineral backbone that keeps everything lifted rather than heavy. Enjoyable now with a short decant for aromatic openness, it has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 6–10 years, gaining additional complexity and softness over time.

Production
The grapes for Weingut Rings Syrah 2020 come from carefully selected vineyard parcels in the Pfalz, where warm, sunny days are moderated by cool nights and steady breezes. The soils are typically a mix of limestone, loam and sandstone, contributing both ripeness and a distinctive mineral thread to the wine. Rings is known for sustainable, often organic-leaning vineyard work, with low yields and predominantly manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the cellar. In the winery, the fruit is sorted meticulously, then fermented—often with a proportion of whole clusters—to accentuate spice, freshness and structure. Gentle extraction, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and aging in quality oak barrels (a mix of used and a measured amount of new) allow the Syrah to develop texture and complexity while preserving purity of fruit and a clear sense of place.

Food & Serving
Weingut Rings Syrah 2020 is a versatile food wine that shines alongside hearty, savory dishes. Try it with grilled lamb chops, roast duck, braised short ribs, venison, or char-grilled sausages; it also works beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, lentil stews, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. The wine shows best at 16–18°C; if it’s been stored cool, give it a little time to warm in the glass. Decant for 30–60 minutes before serving to allow the aromatics to unfold and the tannins to soften, especially in its youth.

Producer
Weingut Rings is a family-run estate in the Pfalz that has rapidly risen to the top tier of modern German wine producers. Founded as a small mixed farm, it has, over the last two decades, transformed under the hands of brothers Steffen and Andreas Rings, who shifted the focus to high-quality, terroir-driven wines from carefully tended vineyards. Known for their precise Rieslings and increasingly for their outstanding red wines, Rings has helped redefine what is possible for varieties like Syrah in Germany’s warmer sites. The estate is a member of the prestigious VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), underscoring its status among the country’s elite producers, and is widely regarded as a benchmark for contemporary, sustainable, and characterful winemaking in the Pfalz.
