Description
Weingut P.J. Kühn Riesling Sankt Nikolaus Großes Gewächs 2022 is a powerful, deeply expressive dry Riesling from one of the most privileged sites in the Rheingau. Drawn from some of the estate’s oldest vines in the Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus vineyard, it captures the full influence of the nearby Rhine and the mineral-rich loess soils. As a Großes Gewächs, it represents the top dry classification in Germany, combining concentration, finesse and impressive aging capacity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2022 Riesling shows a bright, luminous straw-yellow hue with greenish reflections, hinting at both youth and tension. The nose is precise and layered, with aromas of ripe citrus, yellow stone fruit and orchard apple supported by notes of crushed herbs, wet stone, subtle floral tones and a fine, chalky minerality.
On the palate, the wine is dry, tightly woven and elegant, with a striking interplay of ripe fruit and salty, stony freshness. Concentrated yet never heavy, it offers flavors of lime zest, white peach, mirabelle and delicate spice, all carried by a vibrant, linear acidity. The long élevage on full lees adds texture and a fine, almost creamy mid-palate while preserving a cool, energetic finish. This Riesling has excellent aging potential; over the next 10–15 years it will gain further complexity, with more pronounced herbal, smoky and honeyed nuances emerging over time.
Production
The Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus site lies directly by the Rhine, whose broad surface reflects additional sunlight into the vineyard while ensuring constant air circulation and moderating extremes of heat and cold. Sandy, calcareous loess soils lend both finesse and depth, and here stand some of the oldest Riesling vines in the estate’s holdings—over 65 years old—naturally yielding small, highly concentrated berries. The grapes for this Großes Gewächs are harvested exclusively by hand in meticulous selection, ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. After a carefully managed, gentle pressing that lasts several hours, the must is allowed to ferment spontaneously with wild yeasts, without any oenological additives or technical manipulation. The wine then matures for 16 months on the full lees, which contributes to its texture, complexity and age-worthiness.
Food & Serving
This Riesling pairs beautifully with refined, flavor-intense dishes such as poached or roasted turbot, scallops, lobster, or hake with beurre blanc, as well as veal in light sauces, roasted poultry, or pork with delicate herb and citrus accents. It also works superbly with fine Asian cuisine featuring ginger, lemongrass and mild chili, or with high-quality, subtly aged hard cheeses. Serve at 10–12 °C to allow the aromatic complexity and mineral nuances to unfold. Decanting 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to open up the nose and soften the initial tension on the palate.
