Description
Weingut P.J. Kühn’s Riesling Doosberg Großes Gewächs is one of the Rheingau’s benchmark dry Rieslings, drawn from a historic hillside that rises directly above the Rhine. This is a precision-crafted, organically and biodynamically farmed single-vineyard wine that marries depth, tension and finesse in equal measure. Previous vintages have earned rave reviews from leading critics, and the current release continues that legacy with impressive clarity and age‑worthy structure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Doosberg GG shows a bright, pale lemon color with green reflections, hinting at both youth and vibrancy. The nose is intense yet finely etched, with layers of ripe stone fruit and citrus—think white peach, mirabelle and grapefruit zest—woven together with cool herbal notes, crushed slate, chamomile, and a subtle, smoky, almost flinty edge.
On the palate, this Riesling is dry, concentrated and tightly wound, with a core of juicy yet precise fruit supported by a firm, saline backbone. Citrus, lime peel and white peach are joined by hints of green apple, wild herbs, and a delicate, savoury minerality that lingers long on the finish. The texture is both silky and energetic, driven by vibrant acidity and a finely layered structure that promises significant development in bottle. Built for the long haul, this wine will reward patience over 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity, spice and tertiary, honeyed nuances with time.
Production
The Doosberg vineyard rises above the village of Oestrich on the eastern side of the Rheingau, stretching from the Rhine’s banks up to around 150 meters above sea level. Here, deep, carbonate‑rich soils with loess, marl and mineral-rich subsoils provide excellent water retention and a distinctive, salty-mineral profile, while the gentle slope and favorable exposure ensure optimal ripening without excess heat. At Weingut P.J. Kühn, the vines are farmed organically and biodynamically, with low yields and meticulous hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it into the cellar. Fermentation is typically spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is given extended time on the full and then fine lees—often in large traditional vessels—before bottling, allowing it to gain textural depth, aromatic complexity and remarkable stability without undue manipulation.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Riesling that shines alongside refined dishes. Pair it with delicately prepared seafood such as turbot, halibut or scallops, as well as fine sushi and sashimi, or classic Rheingau fare like trout with herbs. It also works beautifully with white asparagus, poultry in light, creamy sauces, veal, or subtly spiced Asian cuisine where freshness and precision are key. Serve at 9–11 °C to highlight its tension and aromatics. A short decant of 30–60 minutes for young bottles can help the wine open up and reveal its full spectrum of fruit and mineral nuances.
