Description

Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Riesling Zeppelin 2024 is a vibrant, classically styled Mosel Riesling that captures the estate’s hallmark balance of purity, finesse and drinkability. Named in honor of the historic Zeppelin airships that once showcased Mosel wines to the world, this cuvée is crafted to be both immediately charming and quietly sophisticated. It’s a perfect introduction to the elegance and energy that have made Riesling from this region so celebrated among wine lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with a slight green shimmer, signaling freshness and youth. The nose opens with lifted aromas of white peach, green apple and ripe pear, layered with lime zest, blossom, and a subtle slatey minerality that is so typical of the Mosel. Hints of citrus peel and a whisper of herbal notes (think lemon balm) add complexity without ever feeling heavy. On the palate, this Riesling is juicily off-dry to feinherb in style, where a gentle touch of sweetness is perfectly countered by mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of stone fruit, crunchy apple, and tangy citrus glide across the mid-palate, supported by a fine mineral backbone and a clean, precise structure. The finish is long, bright and delicately salty, inviting another sip. Enjoyable in its youth for its exuberant fruit, it will gain extra nuance—more honeyed notes and deeper minerality—over the next 3–5 years if cellared well.

Production
The Zeppelin Riesling is sourced from steep, slate-rich vineyards along the Mosel River, where cool nights and long, gentle ripening seasons preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. Vines dig deep into weathered blue and gray slate soils, which lend the wine its signature mineral edge and finesse. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to allow for careful selection and minimal damage, often in multiple passes to capture optimal ripeness. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in stainless steel and/or traditional large, neutral oak casks at controlled cool temperatures, preserving the delicate aromatics. The wine rests on its fine lees before bottling, enhancing texture and complexity while keeping the style crisp, pure and refreshingly precise.

Food & Serving
This Riesling is wonderfully versatile at the table. Its bright acidity and gentle sweetness make it a natural companion to spicy Asian cuisine (Thai, Vietnamese, or mildly spiced Sichuan), sushi, and aromatic dishes with ginger, lemongrass or coriander. It also pairs beautifully with fresh goat cheese, soft bloomy cheeses, shellfish, ceviche, and lightly smoked fish, as well as classic German fare like schnitzel with lemon or salads with citrus dressings. Serve well-chilled, around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to highlight its freshness; a quick 15–20 minutes in the fridge before serving usually works well. Decanting is not necessary, but giving the wine a few minutes in the glass to open up will reveal more layers of fruit and minerality.

Producer
Weingut Max Ferd. Richter is one of the Mosel’s historic family estates, with roots dating back to the 17th century and an unbroken winemaking tradition spanning several generations. Based in Mülheim an der Mosel, the winery has long been recognized for its classic, terroir-driven Rieslings from some of the region’s most esteemed vineyards. The Richter family has been instrumental in championing a style that combines elegance, moderate alcohol and precise sweetness-acid balance, earning international acclaim and a loyal following among Riesling enthusiasts. Today, the estate continues to marry traditional methods—steep slate vineyards, hand harvesting, and old casks—with modern precision, maintaining its reputation as a benchmark producer in the Mosel.
