Description
Weingut Markus Molitor’s Brauneberger Mandelgraben* Pinot Noir 2020 is a striking Mosel red that shows how precisely this iconic producer can handle Pinot Noir. Sourced from carefully selected grapes and marked with Molitor’s star designation, it reflects one of the estate’s top cuvées and offers remarkable quality for the price. The wine combines German slate-driven character with the finesse and charm that have made Pinot Noir a benchmark grape around the world.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a vibrant red-fruited profile with an elegant, polished feel. The nose brings a subtle smoky, flinty edge over layers of ripe strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry, giving the wine a lifted, almost electric energy.
On the palate, it is silky and finely textured, with precise red berry fruit, refreshing acidity, and a light mineral tension that reflects its Mosel origin. The slate influence adds a savory, slightly spicy dimension, while 15 months in French barrique lends gentle structure and depth without overpowering the fruit. This is a Pinot Noir with excellent balance and the potential to age gracefully over the medium term.
Production
Brauneberger Mandelgraben is a slate-rich site in the Mosel, where the cool climate and mineral soils help preserve freshness and finesse in the Pinot Noir grapes. Markus Molitor’s approach centers on strict grape selection, and the estate’s star cuvées are made only from the best fruit from his vineyards. The wine was aged for 15 months in French barriques, adding subtle oak complexity and texture to the naturally expressive fruit.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roast duck, game birds, veal, mushroom dishes, and salmon, as well as lighter dishes with earthy or smoky elements. Serve it slightly cool, around 14–16°C, to highlight its freshness and detail. Decanting for 30 minutes can help open up the wine’s smoky mineral notes and refine its aromatic complexity.
Producer
Weingut Markus Molitor is one of the Mosel’s most respected estates, known first and foremost for world-class Riesling but also for Pinot Noir of exceptional quality. Markus Molitor has built a reputation for meticulous vineyard work, rigorous selection, and wines that consistently punch far above their price point. His star system highlights the estate’s best cuvées, and wines like Brauneberger Mandelgraben* showcase why the producer is considered a reference point in Germany and beyond.
