Description
Weingut Lenhardt Mehringer Blattenberg Riesling Spätlese 1999 is a rare piece of living Mosel history, capturing the elegance and precision of classic Riesling from the turn of the millennium. Produced by Christa Lenhardt in what would become her final vintage before the estate went into hibernation, it offers both remarkable provenance and the timeless appeal of off-dry Mosel wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Spätlese shows the graceful evolution you want from a well-kept mature Riesling: still bright in color, with freshness that belies its age. The nose combines clear fruit with developing tertiary complexity, while the palate remains lively and balanced, showing vivid acidity, refined sweetness, and a layered, elegant finish.
After more than two decades, the wine has gained depth and nuance without losing energy. Expect a fascinating interplay of preserved fruit, subtle honeyed notes, and classic Mosel minerality, with enough vitality to continue drinking beautifully for some time yet.
Production
This wine comes from Mehringer Blattenberg in the Mosel, a region known for its steep slopes, cool climate, and slate-driven soils that give Riesling its signature precision and tension. The 1999 vintage reflects traditional Mosel craftsmanship, with careful harvesting of ripe Riesling grapes and vinification focused on preserving freshness, purity, and natural balance.
Food & Serving
A mature Mosel Spätlese like this pairs beautifully with Asian dishes with a touch of sweetness, pork with fruit-based sauces, chicken, mild blue cheese, or aged goat cheese. Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 8-10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though opening it a little in advance can help the wine show its full aromatic range.
Producer
Weingut Lenhardt is a family estate with a compelling modern history rooted in Mosel tradition. Founded and run by Christa Lenhardt, the winery closed after her 1999 vintage when she stepped away to raise her children, before being revived in 2017 by Eva and Christian Lenhardt. Since reopening, the estate has earned significant recognition in the Mosel, including its first 100-point wine in 2023, underscoring the family’s remarkable continuity and rising stature.
