Weingut Leiner Spätburgunder Kapelle 2019 is a finely etched, single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the famed Kalmit hill in the Pfalz. Crafted without barrique and raised instead in larger 500-liter oak casks, it offers a wonderfully pure, cool-fruited expression of German Spätburgunder. This cuvée captures both the elegance of Burgundy-style Pinot and the limestone-driven precision that has made the Kalmit one of the most respected sites along the Haardt.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Kapelle Spätburgunder shows a translucent ruby to garnet hue, with a delicate brightness that hints at its finesse-driven style. The nose is beautifully composed and already very harmonious: subtle sweet cherry and wild raspberry meet fine notes of nougat, roasted hazelnut and a faint stony, cool undertone. Nothing feels loud or overripe; instead, the aromas are finely interwoven and quietly complex. On the palate, the wine is precise and linear, with a red-berry profile led by cherry and raspberry, including a distinctive hint of raspberry seed that adds a fine, pleasantly bitter grip. The texture is silky yet taut, supported by fresh, vibrant acidity and finely grained tannins that glide rather than grip. Oak is present only as a gentle frame, never overshadowing the fruit or minerality. This is a Spätburgunder built more on finesse than power, with a long, elegant and subtly spicy finish. It is already approachable, but the structure and balance suggest very good aging potential over the next 6–8 years from vintage, gaining in complexity and tertiary nuances with time.

Production
The Kapelle parcel lies on the slopes of the Kalmit, one of the highest and most iconic elevations at the edge of the Haardt in the southern Pfalz. The site is characterized by hillside loam with significant limestone deposits, giving the wines both aromatic lift and a pronounced mineral backbone. At Weingut Leiner, farming is typically meticulous and low-intervention, with careful hand work in the vineyard and selective harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Spätburgunder grapes are brought to the cellar. Fermentation is usually spontaneous with native yeasts, allowing the character of the site to come through unmasked. Instead of barrique, the wine is matured in 500-liter oak casks, which provide gentle micro-oxygenation and textural refinement without dominating the delicate Pinot fruit, resulting in a balanced, terroir-driven expression.

Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is an ideal partner for refined yet comforting dishes: think roast duck or guinea fowl, herb-roasted chicken, pork tenderloin with thyme, or veal in light jus. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, such as wild mushroom risotto or tagliatelle with porcini, as well as mild game birds and charcuterie with soft cheeses. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its freshness and detail. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes can help the aromatics open up, especially in its youth, but it can also be enjoyed directly from the bottle with a large-bowled Pinot Noir glass.
