Description
Weingut Leiner Riesling Kapelle bio 2019 is a strikingly characterful dry Riesling from the renowned Ilbesheimer Kalmit in Germany’s Pfalz, bottled as Landwein to preserve maximum freedom in the cellar. Sourced from the estate’s oldest vines and farmed biodynamically, it delivers an impressive combination of precision, depth and mineral-driven intensity. This is widely regarded as one of the most exciting Rieslings ever produced by Sven Leiner, showing just how expressive this limestone-rich site can be.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Riesling Kapelle shows a luminous straw-yellow color with greenish reflections, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is immediately engaging and complex: ripe citrus (lime, grapefruit zest), crisp green apple and white peach intertwine with notes of wet stone, crushed shell and a delicate herbal edge, alongside subtle hints of wild yeast, blossom and a faint smokiness from the limestone soils.
On the palate, the wine is dry, taut and finely textured, with a vivid line of acidity that is balanced by ripe, juicy fruit. Expect layers of citrus and stone fruit, salty minerality, and a touch of phenolic grip from the extended skin contact, giving it a pleasantly pithy, almost tea-like structure. The finish is long, precise and saline, with a mouthwatering, cool herbal lift that invites another sip. Thanks to its concentration, structure and natural acidity, this 2019 has excellent aging potential and should evolve beautifully over 8–10 years, gaining more complexity, spice and tertiary notes while retaining its core of freshness.
Production
The Riesling Kapelle bio 2019 comes from the Ilbesheimer Kalmit, a top site in southern Pfalz characterized by clay-limestone soils, a warm south-facing exposition and cooling fall winds from the nearby Pfälzer Wald, which help preserve aromatic freshness and acidity. The vines here are among Weingut Leiner’s oldest, cultivated according to strict biodynamic principles that emphasize soil vitality, biodiversity and low yields. The grapes were harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and given an extended maceration on the skins to extract aroma, texture and a fine tannic backbone before being gently pressed. The must was then allowed to ferment spontaneously with native yeasts, without fining, filtration or other intensive oenological interventions, resulting in a wine that transparently reflects its terroir and vintage.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is particularly well suited to refined, aromatic cuisine: think ceviche, sashimi, grilled or steamed white fish, shellfish, and dishes with citrus or ginger accents. It also pairs beautifully with lightly spiced Asian dishes, modern vegetable-focused plates, asparagus, fresh goat’s cheese and poultry with herb-driven sauces. Serve at 8–10 °C to highlight its tension and minerality; a brief decanting of 30 minutes can help the wine open up, softening the initial grip and allowing its layered aromatics and saline depth to fully emerge.
Producer
Weingut Jürgen Leiner, today driven by the vision of Sven Leiner, is one of the leading biodynamic estates in the Pfalz and a benchmark for terroir-driven Riesling in southern Germany. Over the years, the family has steadily moved away from formulaic, bureaucratic constraints, choosing instead to bottle many of their top sites as Landwein to preserve stylistic freedom and authenticity. Their work in the Ilbesheimer Kalmit, with old vines, living soils and minimal intervention in the cellar, has earned them a strong reputation among sommeliers and Riesling enthusiasts. Weingut Leiner is widely recognized for its commitment to biodynamics, its expressive, low-intervention wines and its significant role in redefining what Pfalz Riesling can be.
