Description
Weingut Knipser Rosé Fumé 2021 is a characterful, barrel‑influenced rosé that brings a touch of sophistication to a category often reserved for simple, easy drinking. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown in the sun‑drenched Pfalz, it marries vibrant freshness with gentle smokiness from oak aging. This is a gastronomic rosé designed for the table, not just the terrace.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Rosé Fumé 2021 shows a delicate salmon to pale copper hue with brilliant clarity. The nose opens with redcurrant, wild strawberry and blood orange zest, layered with subtle notes of toasted nuts, vanilla pod and a hint of smoke that betrays its time in oak.
On the palate, it is dry, medium‑bodied and precise, with juicy red berries, cranberry and pomegranate supported by a fine, refreshing acidity. The oak influence is well‑judged: think gentle spice, a whisper of toast and a slight creamy roundness on the mid‑palate, all wrapped in a clean, mineral finish. This vintage drinks beautifully now for its energy and definition, but has the structure to evolve over the next 2–3 years, gaining more savory and spicy complexity.
Production
The grapes for Knipser Rosé Fumé 2021 come from well‑exposed vineyards in the northern Pfalz, where warm, dry summers and cool nights help Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot ripen fully while preserving acidity. The region’s diverse soils, with components of loess, limestone and gravel, contribute both fruit intensity and a subtle mineral backbone. Fruit is typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to allow careful selection in the vineyard. After a brief maceration to extract color and aroma, the juice is gently pressed and fermented, with at least a portion matured in oak (often used barriques or larger wooden casks) to impart the wine’s hallmark smoky, spicy nuances while maintaining freshness. A period on fine lees further adds texture and complexity before bottling.
Food & Serving
This is a rosé that shines at the table. Its structure and subtle smokiness make it an excellent match for grilled seafood, roasted chicken, charcuterie, and Mediterranean dishes such as grilled vegetables, herbed lamb skewers or ratatouille. It also works beautifully with smoked fish, sushi and richer salads featuring goat cheese or roasted beetroot. Serve at around 10–12 °C to balance freshness and aromatic expression. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or in a carafe is enough to let the oak‑derived notes unfold; extended decanting is not necessary.
